Problem

The health care system has seen an increase in the burden of the poor patient outcome

because there has been unproductive handoff and poor communication among the nurses. The

steadiness of care that the patients receive when hospitalized is enhanced by the handoff (Ayala,

2017). Ensuring safe and quality healthcare for the patients is vital to identify and prevent poor

communication and ineffective handoff (Burgener, 2020). A comprehensive understanding of both

intentional and emotional information in the conversation and reporting is required in order to have

an effective handoff.

During handoff, poor communication can result in patients facing problems and challenges

associated with medical errors and strong effects due to overdose and complications related to bad

management and overlooked procedures like late surgeries. Reduction of hospitalization duration,

patient outcome improvement, enhancement of job satisfaction among the nurses, and the reduced

medical error rate can be achieved by correct reporting and handoff of patients’ information.

The idea for Addressing Solution

A significant influence on patients' health outcomes can be made possible by proper

handoff and effective communication, encouraging nurse-to-patient relationships. Poor

communication and ineffective handoff can be tackled by the nurses within the health facilities

when they develop acceptable practices, plans, and strategies to aid in good health care outcomes.

Application and passage of the usage of situation, background, argument, and recommendations

(SBAR) as a communication tool amongst the nurses all through the process of communication

can be initiated when there are measures used for providing the shift reports and handing off the

patients amid the nurses.

Information that is supposed to be passed to the new nurses should be passed in a clear,

concise, and consistent manner. This can be achieved when the health care providers and the nurses

advocate for putting up a standard communication tool that can be used when handing off essential

information. The best mode to advocate can be legislation since many people have more respect

for legislation on top of regulations. Improvement of patient care quality and safety in the entire

country can be made possible by legislation since it generalizes all the policies and principles to

the whole healthcare system than just a single health care facility or organization.

Research the issue

Enhancement of the passage of patient’s information can be made safer and centered for

patients by utilizing the SBAR tool of communication in nurses' communication during handoff.

The SBAR can help nurses get easily forgotten information about a patient and have the time used

during handoff reduced. Consequently, preventing worsening of patients’ situations, reduced

readmissions, and early discharge can be enabled by continuity of care and identifying patients’

clinical manifestations early enough.

There have been remarkable impacts on the health care system since the SBAR

communication tool was implemented. The legislation has significantly reduced medical errors

that result in long durations of hospitalization among the patients and increased complications. It

has been discovered that the cost of the health care delivery system is increased by medical errors

associated with the ineffective handoff.

still faces many challenges despite the support from various stakeholders; this can be caused by

poor understanding of the legislation when the solutions are advocated, formulated, and

implemented. For that reason, when policymakers are formulating and advocating for change in

the communication and handoff system, they should make sure that the nurses are involved at the

lowest level.

Stakeholder Opposition

In every occurrence of change, there is resistance. In a situation where there is a shortage

of nurses due to some nurses resigning due to dissatisfaction at work, frequent nursing turnover

can be witnessed. The few nurses left at work will be overworked, exhausted, and stressed and

henceforth created resistance.

Financial Incentives/Costs

During the past decades, the health care cost has been increasing significantly. An increase

in the need for health care services among people suffering from illnesses like cardiovascular

diseases, diabetes, and baby boomers will see the health care cost double shortly this is according

to Shapiro (2017). Lengthy hospitalization duration due to poor communication and ineffective

handoff results in increased medical errors. This, on the other hand, increases the cost of health

care services for the patient.

Utilization of resources to ensure that the patient recovers, manage adverse effects related

to medical errors, and treating patients is the burden of the health care organizations and

institutions. Therefore, the costs of the provision of services of health care are increased. This also

results in insured patients being paid double by insurance companies (Stewart, 2017). Increased

pay to the insurance company by the patient’s employer is also witnessed. Hospital readmissions

cause time wastage among the employees, making the economy and financial state of a country at

large to be strained.

Information Needed and Process for Proposal

During the enhancement of proposal passage, research and the data are critical in the

advocacy during the legislation process. This is because the policymakers, the media, and the

public are helped by the data and the research that makes a concrete case for them concerning the

Stakeholder Support

The lawmakers, policymakers, health care providers, and organization managers are some

of the stakeholders who will support the legislation and solution. Other essential stakeholders in

the front line are the patients because they benefit most from the solution legislated. The legislation

solutions for existing problems and the problems themselves. A successful process of legislation

of a proposed solution can be achieved with effective communication through correct message and

framing with the correct stakeholders' target (Shapiro, 2017). It also sees that awareness among

the people and the stakeholders affected by the problem is enhanced. Direct opportunity to get a

direct influence and enhanced development of a close relationship which will allow the advocacy

for the needed change can be achieved when the lawmakers and the policymakers are engaged and

educated

Christian Principles and Nursing Advocacy

Advocacy for change in the practice of the patient handoff will see the application of

servant leadership principles. An excellent example of a selfless servant leader was Jesus Christ

because he served others without expecting anything in return. The bible teaches of instances

where he healed the sick, fed the hungry, and other selfless deeds he did without expecting

anything in return. The improvement of patient outcomes and healthcare service delivery without

expecting anything in return is also what the advocacy aims to bring.
