MODULE LESSON: EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Many think of an IQ when considering intelligence. In addition to IQ in the traditional sense of factual information, there are other areas of intelligence, such as social intelligence and emotional intelligence. Individuals with social intelligence can sense how other people feel, know intuitively what to say in social situations, and seem self-assured. They know what makes others tick. They’re aware of the motives and feelings of themselves and others, and how to fit into different social situations. They can feel comfortable and say the right thing whether they’re in the boardroom or the janitorial room, in a school setting or at a construction site.

However, this week we will be focusing on emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence (EQ) refers to the ability to identify and regulate our own emotions, to recognize the emotions of other people and feel empathy toward them, and to use these abilities to communicate effectively and build healthy, productive relationships with others. Some experts believe that this ability is more important in determining life success than IQ alone.

Different ways to practice emotional intelligence in your daily life include:

· Being able to accept criticism and responsibility

· Being able to move on after making a mistake

· Being able to say no when you need to

· Being able to share your feelings with others

· Being able to solve problems in ways that work for everyone

· Having empathy for other people

· Having great listening skills

· Knowing why you do the things you do

· Not being judgmental of others

Part of your learning activities will be completing a self-assessment (free!) of your own EQ.  After acquiring this knowledge, you will be asked to discuss a situation where emotional intelligence could assist a nurse leader in addressing an issue. Specific attributes that can foster a positive relationship will be explored and consideration to intergenerational dynamics and perspectives will be included.

Scenario

Applying what you read from the text, learned from your self-assessment, and watched in the video, please address the following questions:

Discussion Questions

1. Describe a situation that you witnessed or heard in a professional setting that depicts emotional intelligence or the lack thereof. Describe the dynamics that applied to this concept as outlined in the lesson materials.

2. Describe two attributes that support therapeutic relationships with patients or colleagues to facilitate optimal care and improved patient outcomes. Explain how the tenets of emotional intelligence aid in relationship development and contribute to positive outcomes.

3. Most healthcare settings include multiple generations of nursing staff. As a nurse leader, how would you apply principles of emotional intelligence in the development of a mentorship program that addresses the needs of multiple generations of nurses?
