Advancing Scientific Knowledge and Significance of the Study

This study’s significance is to shed light on the need to make African American women

visible in leadership roles where they have no access to such career advancements due to

intersectionality. Research regarding the use of mentoring in higher education suggests further

investigation of how race and gender shape human relationships (Bryant et al., 2016). The study

will contribute to Carter and Peters (2016) prior studies, which explains the need for further

research regarding intersectionality because research views gender and racial inequality

separately instead of treating the components as one identity to explore African American

women’s lived experiences. The double jeopardy that African American women encounter

hinders their advancements, so these women often conform to perceptions generated by others of

who they are. The proposed research study will explain how mentoring should serve as a

resource to ensure that African American women have safe havens to face adversities.

The study extends the knowledge and research of Patricia Collins’ Black Feminist

Thought regarding the reconfiguration of how African American women can transition from

being to becoming in academe (Heidi, 2015). Women are not achieving leadership roles like men

because women are not sharing knowledge to ensure success. These women are competing for a

seat at the leadership table, so mentoring one another is unsuccessful. Kalbfleish and Keyton’s

model suggests that the mentoring experience is beneficial between the same-gender

stakeholders. However, research contradicts this model as it details that African American

women’s experiences details that support from other women were nonexistent due to competition

and fear of replacement (Redmond et al., 2017). This study will contribute to the knowledge base

of prior studies regarding Black Feminist Thought and intersectionality by addressing the lived

experiences with mentoring for African American women who encounter marginality due to race,

class, gender, and other divisions.
