“A Dream of Freedom”

Martin Luther King Jr, delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on August 28, 1963. He delivered the unforgettable speech “I Have a Dream” at the Lincoln Memorial. This speech took place during the civil rights movement. As a whole, the speech intends to put faith into the American country to help him create a change using pathos as the strongest appeal to create a place where the color of the skin does not limit changes and unity, “With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood” (par. 26)

The year of the speech the United States of America was confronting one of the biggest problems of all times, racism, and working towards equality of race. The intended audience of the speech were white people making clear the idea that the Negro community would not stop fighting peacefully until their rights are the same as white people – “…the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood” (par. 18.).

Said speech is formed by several memorable references in thirty-two paragraphs. Martin Luther King Jr talks about creating a better future for the generations that are about to come, to create a country where the color of the skin has no matter and the person’s principles counts with the biggest importance, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character” (par. 20)

The heartwarming speech its conformed by several repetitions such as the phrase “I have a dream today!” (par. 21,23) . This repetition needed to express that the change has to be done as soon as possible and expresses that the change must be in the present because of the use of the word today in the phrase. Also used by him to show what he sees in a close future of the United States. Martin Luther King uses lots of examples to create emotions, to show citizens how amazing and peaceful life would be without discrimination or segregation in the United States of America “I have a dream that one day…little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers” (par.22).

The appeal showed in the speech matches the characteristics of pathos because the speech itself tries to create emotions and persuade the audience to work towards change between them and to forget about the differences regarding the color of the skin , which was the main issue during those times where racial discrimination was at the strongest point in the United States.one of the things he says to appeal the emotions is in paragraph twenty six “… we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together , to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together…” .

The entire speech King uses examples of how life would be if the nation works together towards change trough the pathos appeal. Trying to influence people of the nation throughout his inspirational words trying to open everyone’s eyes that each individual has the same rights as the other no matter what. Clarifying the idea that the Negro community will not stop fighting until their rights are the same as white people, until the United States becomes a nation were equality rules over all.
