Management skills are not perfected overnight and must be constantly strengthened
and developed. Throughout this course, I learned theories, techniques, and lessons that have
already developed and improved my management skills. To be successful in management it is
necessary to be educated, confident, and have good leadership skills. This paper is a reflection on
what I have learned throughout this course and how it applies to the development of my
management skills. This course has been extremely helpful in explaining what management is
and how management skills turn good leaders into great leaders. This paper will focus on how I
plan to use the knowledge I have gained from this course to make sure I have the management
skills necessary to succeed.
Management skills are extremely useful in many aspects of life and can make the
difference between how successful a person is. This course has changed my understanding of
what management is and what it means to manage. Before this course, I assumed a lot of a
manager's job is to tell people what to do and make sure everyone stays on task. However, since
taking this course, I understand that there is a lot more work that goes into successfully
managing a company or yourself. I now understand that in order to be a successful manager, it is
necessary to have a strong set of management skills and a high level of emotional intelligence
(Daft & Marcic, 2014). Possessing strong management skills takes time, knowledge, and
experience. Great management is more than possessing natural leadership capabilities. Great
management involves a combination of a high degree of knowledge, leadership skills, and
organizational skills.
This course has also let me reflect on my strengths and weaknesses in terms of
management skills and has taught me how I can improve my management skills. There are ten
main management skills associated with being a successful manager, and each one is vital to

possess (Daft & Marcic, 2014). By completing the Daft Marcic Assessments, I was able to
determine where my management skills are at and how I can improve them. I noticed that my
greatest management skills and strengths are my goal-directed mindset, organizational skills, and
emotional intelligence. I also noticed that my weakest management skills are not feeling good
enough and the lack of self-confidence. Although I can successfully organize and have a strong
goal-directed mindset, I often struggle to manage a team of people because I lack self-confidence
and I often doubt my abilities. In group work, I am often very quiet and do not share my ideas
because I feel everyone else is smarter and has better ideas. Having confidence and feeling good
enough is something I have often struggled with and affects my abilities to manage people. If I
cannot believe in myself and my ideas, it would be unrealistic to expect other people to listen to
me. In the future, my hopes in relation to my management skills are to keep developing my
existing management skills while expanding my knowledge of philosophy and social science
behind successful management. I plan on improving my areas of weakness by trying to stop
comparing myself to others and focusing more on what I have and what I will accomplish.
Emotional intelligence drastically affects how managers interact (Daft & Marcic,
2014). It is crucial to be able to keep your emotions under control as a successful manager
(White, 2020). The textbook Building Management Skills defines emotional intelligence as the
"ability to perceive, identify, understand, and successfully manage emotions in self and other"
(Daft & Marcic, 2014). After completing the daft assessments and doing some research, I believe
I have a high level of emotional intelligence in most aspects of emotional intelligence. However,
I have strong emotions, which can make separating my emotions from my job a challenge. This
course has helped me to understand the importance of having emotional intelligence and not
letting emotions get in the way of managing a team or company. In management, emotional

intelligence is one of the keys to being a successful manager (White, 2020). In the future, I plan
to strengthen my emotional intelligence by making sure I can manage my own emotions when
dealing with other people. Once I believe I am in full control over myself, I will be able to
confidently lead a team.
In the textbook Building Management Skills, the author gave a clear description
of the different levels of management. There are many different types, styles, and levels of
management and a company (Daft & Marcic, 2014). Management is typically divided into three
levels: top, middle, and lower-level management (Daft & Marcic, 2014). The levels of
management are often viewed in the shape of a pyramid (Moores, 2019). Lower-level managers
have less responsibility and are usually needed in large quantities (Daft & Marcic, 2014). The top
of the management pyramid contains only one or a few top managers carrying the highest
amount of responsibility (Daft & Marcic, 2014). Low-level management usually manages a
small team, whereas top management usually oversees a large part of a company (Moores, 2019).
Given the author's description of levels of management, some implications I can see for myself
are starting as a low-level manager to learn more management skills. After some management
experience, I would eventually like to become a top manager with my own business. Currently, I
do not believe my management skills are at my personal best. I believe I will need to continue to
work hard and challenge myself in order to strengthen my management skills and become the
best leader I can be.
To possess strong management skills, I must continue developing my management
skills and strengthen my areas of weakness. Management skills can be improved in several
different ways by reading, taking courses, listening to podcasts, or volunteering and working in a
leadership or management position (Doyle, 2018). The steps I plan on taking to strengthen my

management skills are to continue to take different types of management courses throughout my
university career and to read books that contain a strong focus on management skills. In the
future, I hope to start my own business, where my management skills will greatly affect how my
business does. This is why I want to continue developing my management skills and learning
about different management techniques and theories.
This course has been extremely informative and has changed the way I view
management. Throughout this paper, I reflected on what I have learned so far about management
skills. I was also able to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of my management skills and
abilities. This course has already allowed me to reflect on my past management experiences and
has made me question what I would do differently with the information I now possess. I now
understand my strengths and weaknesses and how I can improve my management skills.
Management skills are not just used in the workplace. Management skills are used in school,
relationships, hobbies, and many other aspects of life (Doyle, 2018). Having strong management
skills does not only help people in a management position at work but will also help people in
their personal lives (Daft & Marcic, 2014). Management skills are very important to have. So, I
will make it a priority to continue to strengthen and develop my management skills.
So far, this course has taught me the different levels, types, skills, and theories of
management. This information has already greatly affected my understanding of management,
and I will continue to keep expanding my knowledge of management and my management skills.
I have only had the opportunity to manage myself and small teams. In the future, I hope to have
the opportunity to manage a large team or a business where it will be vital to have strong
management skills.
