Milagros had stated that while earning her degree she faced many challenges, to name a few: financially, time management, work and stress. To overcome those challenges; she had to learn how to create a budget, so she can be up-to-date with her bills, which included her college tuition. She had to learn how to time management, so she could have time to study and work at the same time. She mentioned she was very lucky to have a support at work, which permitted her to have a flexible schedule that worked around her school schedule. Also, she sought help from a therapist to receive counseling and tutoring for her struggled subjects. Milagros enjoyed learning new things. She enjoyed having professors that were passionate about teaching, and enthusiasm made her learn better and faster. If there were something she could do differently, she would’ve liked to participate more in class, she mentioned she was very shy, so she would have better grades. Milagros friends’ influences were crucial while earning her college degree. She was surrounded by friends that were going through almost the same situations as her; so, they kept encouraging each other. Milagros’s advice was to “not lose focus on the main goal. William Johnson is between the age of 33 and 38 years old. He attended Johnson and wales and earned his degree in Criminal Justice. He is currently working for providence police department as a detective. He faced many challenges while working on his degree, such as financially, age, family pressure and work challenges. William decided to go back to school when he was on his late 20’s. “how can you go back to school when your main priority is your family and work?.” for William going back to school after being a husband and a dad was not easy. He would have to learn to manage his time for school and his family. At that time, he was self-employed, he was a barber. He explained that he turned his job schedule around working by appointments, so he would be able to manage his time with his family and school. Even though for him was not possible to add something more to his schedule, he still managed to organize his time. His wife was a major key to his success, many times he thought of dropping out of college, but she was his support, mentally and emotional. He proudly said that all the struggles and challenges made him appreciative of his career and he wouldn’t change a single thing. “everything with dedication and challenging work can bring you a long way, follow your dreams.”
Comparison of the college graduate
The interview was conducted on 4 college graduated. While some had rougher times than other, they all had familiar challenges to overcome. Most of the interviewee had the challenges of having to work full time due to having family’s responsibilities. Some students said they had thoughts of dropping out of school due to the stress and overwhelm of having too much work, but what help them the most was to be able to learn time management and reach out for support. In the other hand, some didn’t have to worry about working, because parents will provide for them. While for others they could have done things differently, for others they’re very appreciative of the struggled path to graduation. But one thing they all have in common was the effort to reach their goal of graduating from college.
Reflections on Lessons Learned from the Research
What I learned from this project is that there will always be challenges and rough times, but to always keep your priorities straight. These interviewees all had a lot of things in common with me, specially working while being a student. For me the harder part is to manage my time. I currently work full time, I am a mother of an eight-year-old boy, and now I’m pursuing my career in Criminal Justice. I’m having a tough time adjusting to my new schedule. I need to learn how to organize my schedule and learn time management. One thing I will apply to my own path to graduating from Berkeley College is to not let myself go and to keep my challenging work towards graduation. Challenges are part of success. Count.
