LAB REPORT PROPOSAL
1) Research Question: To what extent does genetic predisposition (nature) or environmental factors (nurture) contribute to the development of intelligence /Behavior in individuals? The reason I am chosing this topic is because having grown up in a conventional Indian family, I have learnt certain values and lifestyle patterns in my childhood. However being an adult I find myself quitet different from the rest of my family. I would like to understand the factors that have caused this.
2) In the research area of nature versus nurture, there are several key theories, models, and hypotheses that have been proposed. Here are some prominent ones:
a) Behavior Genetics: This field examines the role of genetic factors in human behavior, including intelligence. It uses twin studies, adoption studies, and family studies to estimate the heritability of traits and determine the extent to which genes influence individual differences.
b) Heritability: Heritability is a statistical measure that quantifies the proportion of observed trait variation in a population that can be attributed to genetic differences. It helps to assess the contribution of genetic factors to individual differences in traits such as intelligence. Comment by Diana Urajnik: Make sure in your final proposal that you write a background section, where you speak to the topic you are proposing to examine, along with literature (make sure to insert references in your final proposal, e.g. be sure to cite the literature, with in-text citations); and state what it is you’re examining and why, e.g. after you provide a review of the literature, state your question, and the need to further examine it.
c) Gene-Environment Interaction: This perspective highlights the dynamic interplay between genetic factors and environmental influences. It suggests that genetic predispositions may interact with specific environments, resulting in different outcomes. For example, certain genetic traits may lead individuals to seek out or create particular environments that further influence their development.
d) Flynn Effect: The Flynn Effect refers to the observed increase in average intelligence test scores over time in many populations. It suggests that environmental factors, such as improved nutrition, education, and access to information, play a significant role in shaping intelligence.
These are just a few examples of the theories, models, and hypotheses in the nature versus nurture research area. Researchers have developed various frameworks to understand the complex interplay between genetic and environmental influences on human traits, including intelligence.
3) One challenge within the nature versus nurture debate is to determine the precise mechanisms through which genetic and environmental factors interact and influence complex traits such as intelligence. Specifically, the mystery lies in understanding the nature of gene-environment interactions and whether certain genetic predispositions are more susceptible to specific environmental influences, leading to differential outcomes.
4) In my research, I have found there to be many theories that have either sided with the nature, or the nurture part of the theory. In my area of interest specifically, there has been no conclusive study on how exactly being in different environments can impact the behavior/intelligence of a human being.
5) The question I have picked does seem to be quite broad. Also, so many studies have not been able to conclusively decide what the answer may be. This makes me wonder if the topic is very challenging - or if I should further refine my question.
6) This research question seeks to explore the intricate relationship between genetic and environmental influences on the development of intelligence in children. By examining the interplay between nature (genetic predispositions) and nurture (environmental factors), the study aims to uncover how these factors interact and contribute to individual differences in cognitive and behavioural abilities. It involves investigating the extent to which genetic factors and environmental contexts, such as socioeconomic status, educational opportunities, and family environment, influence behaviour. Understanding the nature of this interaction can provide valuable insights into the relative contributions of genes and environment, informing strategies for optimizing cognitive development in children and enhancing our understanding of the nature versus nurture debate in intelligence and behavioural research.
7) If the hypothesis that genetic and environmental factors interact to influence behavior is supported by the research findings, it would provide empirical evidence in line with the existing theories and models in the field of developmental psychology. This would validate the notion that both nature and nurture play integral roles in shaping behaviour.
However, if the hypothesis is not supported by the research findings, it would challenge the prevailing beliefs and theories in the field. Such results would require a reevaluation of the current models and hypotheses that propose an interaction between genes and the environment. In summary, the outcomes of the study would have significant implications for the current theory and models in the field of developmental psychology. Comment by Diana Urajnik: You are proposing a very broad question! There is quite a bit of research that has examined this question; so there’s quite a bit of evidence to suggest that nature and nurture interact to influence intelligence/intelligent behaviour. The question is: what hasn’t been done, that you may propose to study, that is more focused; and how will you design a study around it? Comment by Diana Urajnik: You have a main/overall idea here! I suggest to really focus down and be more specific with your question; also: After you refine your question, in your method section, clearly define your variables, and how you will measure them. E.g. what measure/scale will you use for intelligence? Also, do you think there are any confounding variables that you should consider or control for? How will you recruit participants? For example, who/what participants will you recruit, how many and how/from where? What is the procedure? You will need to describe the procedure for recruiting participants and what they will do, and how you are collecting the data (e.g. when, over what period of time). So you have to think about it in terms of a 4th year thesis: think carefully about your recruitment for example, and your measures (you’ll only have a limited time to recruit and conduct a study over the course of the academic year); I would suggest to recruit from the LU student body (a post-secondary population), as you would need a number of approvals, plus ethics approval, to recruit a child/youth sample; and the procedure would be very time consuming. For your question, is there a way you can revise it, that would allow you to study a question around environmental influences on intelligence/intelligent behaviour? (it would be difficult/undoable really to study genetic influences).
