Special note from professor

Hello Everyone,

Please make sure that your post includes the following:

First, identify the disability you are focusing on for this course (selected in Week One’s Post Your Introduction discussion).

Next, describe the behavior you are observing in operational terms (use the five components discussed in the A-B-C Analysis Form).

Synthesize at least three data collection tools for reporting your findings (p. 250-251). This will be Chapter 10 in the electronic book. See the attached example

Professor example

· The disability is being focused on for this course is Emotional Disturbance.  Emotional disturbance can affect individuals beyond emotional. It can affect persons physical, social, or cognitive skills based on the specific disorder (Council for Exceptional Children, n.d.). Some of the behaviors associated with emotional disturbance are: hyperactivity (short attention span, impulsiveness); aggression or self-injurious behavior (acting out, fighting); withdrawal (not interacting socially with others, excessive fear or anxiety); immaturity (inappropriate crying, temper tantrums, poor coping skills); and learning difficulties (academically performing below grade level) (Council for Exceptional Children, n. d., para. 4).

The behavior being observed:

Hyperactivity includes short attention span and/or impulsiveness.

Student: Juanita Henderson

Observer: ____________________

Time//Date/Location: 10:15 a.m./September 11, 2018/General Classroom

Antecedents: Class has begun. General educator has placed work on the board. Juanita is not paying attention. All of a sudden, Juanita gets up from her seat, goes to board, and draws a picture of a butterfly, then goes to the classroom window and looks out.

Behavior: Not paying attention, leaving seat during lesson time, drawing a picture, looking out window.

Consequences: Juanita is taken into the hallway by special education teacher, and explained that her impulsive behavior cause disruption to the class and keeps other students from learning. She is also told that if she cannot pay attention while Mr. Franklin (general education teacher) is teaching, she will spend recess time in the Resource room to do the work that was on the board. Juanita is then brought back in class to her seat.  Note: Juanita hates to go to the Resource room.

Patterns observed: Whenever a subject is being taught that does not interest Juanita, she does something impulsive knowing there are consequences. Juanita disrupts the class by leaving her seat noisily and draws something (butterfly) on the board that does not pertain to the lesson that is being taught or the subject which is language. Juanita’s behavior causes her peers to focus on her instead of the lesson.

Proposed function: Student (Juanita) dislikes language, therefore she tries to avoid the lesson by not paying attention and wants to gain attention from the entire class and draw their attention away from teacher.

Comment: Although the Resource room was used as a consequence, this was a warning to Juanita that she may be removed from the general classroom. General educator and special education educator needs to collaborate on what accommodations or a plan to decrease Juanita’s impulsiveness of drawing peers attention and avoiding the lesson for language/English. A meeting with parents needs to be scheduled.

Data collection tools to be used are:

1. Check Sheet will be used because data can be observed and collected repeatedly by the same person at the same location.

2. Survey will be used to collect data from others who have observed the behaviors.

3. Box and whisker plot will be used to summarize the data received from the survey (ASQ,

n.d.)
