Assignment: Select an article with an ethical dilemma from the news online within the past two weeks. Make sure the article has enough substance so that you will be able to answer the questions below. After reading your article, use the following questions to analyze your article and substantively answer each question.
1. List the name of your article and post a WORKING web link here. Be sure to test the link to make sure it works after you paste it in here.
The name of the article is “friend, adviser, witness: Trudeau’s fate could hinge on the confidant’s testimony” (Porter & Austen, 2019). The link to the articles in https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/05/world/canada/gerald-butts-justin-trudeau.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FEthics&action=click&contentCollection=timestopics®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=4&pgtype=collection
2. Briefly describe the content of the article. Is it fact or opinion? How credible is the information?
The article takes about two friends who have traveled a long way in their friendship until they manage to get senior positions in the Canadian government. Justin Trudeau became the prime minister and Gerald Butts as his strategist, political slugger, and an adviser. There is credible evidence that Trudeau' government tried to influence a criminal prosecution and Mr. Butts is expected to appear as a witness. The testimony of Butt is essential in giving a direction to the case (Porter & Austen, 2019).
3. What is the ethical issue(s)/dilemma(s)? What is implied or conveyed intentionally or unintentionally in the article?
The ethical issue highlighted in the article is that Butts knows all the dealing in the government having been the adviser and a friend to the Prime minister since they formed the government. Butt is torn apart on whether to help the judicial system or his friend. Mr. Butts will try to strike a balance between his friendship with the prime minister and the information revealed by the former Jody Wilson-Raybould (Porter & Austen, 2019).
4. Who are the stakeholders affected and how?
The stakeholders of the issue are the Prime Minister, Mr. Butts and the formers justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould. If Butts concurs with the statement made by the former justice minister, Prime Minister Mr. Trudeau who is his friend will lose his position. The former justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould may get his name tainted if Mr. Butts refutes his statement. The situation forces Butt to trade carefully to reduce the damage that may affect any the parties involved (Porter & Austen, 2019).
5. What is interesting or surprising about the information in the article?
One thing which is interesting about the issue is that Butt resigns from his post and states the reason is to give the prime minister the opportunity to execute his duties without any distraction, yet the prime minister had not sighted him as a source of distraction. Mr. Butts denies the existence of any issue bordering on integrity, yet Prime Minister Mr. Trudeau acknowledges that there are issues and the debate is ongoing (Porter & Austen, 2019).
6. What is not said in the article that should be?
The first important that is not captured in the article that should be known is that the resignation of Mr. Butt was after a long consultation with the Prime Minister Mr. Trudeau bearing in mind the two have been friends for over two decades. The second issue which is not in the article is that the testimony of Mr. Butts aims at protecting the image of the prime minister. Mr. Butts resigns so that the parliament could believe his statement.
7. What is your ethical evaluation of what happened or what was presented in the article?
It is evident that Mr. Butts and Prime Minister Mr. Trudeau violated the constitution by putting pressure on the justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould to settle the criminal case against SNC-Lavalin Company without a conviction. However, their action would be justified because the conviction of the company would mean the dissolution of the firm which would have affected the employees. The prime minister acted in the goodwill to protect the job opportunity offered by SNC-Lavalin Company to the thousand Canadians.
8. In your opinion what decision should be made and why?
9. How should the decision be implemented and who will benefit?
10. What other information would you like to share about this article and the ethical dilemma it presents?
