Introduction and Rationale (30 points)

This section will be 1–2 pages. Use this space to introduce the topic of your paper, presenting necessary statistics and information while building an argument to back the need for an addiction group proposal. In these paragraphs, address the type of addiction group proposed (support, psychoeducational, counseling, etc.) (5 points) and the reasons for the group with accompanying research (5 points). Be sure to present this information in a concise and coherent manner and support all assertions with a reference.

To further build the development of the group proposal, find peer-reviewed articles to discuss the findings from research that demonstrate the benefit of group work with this population. Use this space to discuss other groups that have worked and describe findings from research to support the need for your specific type of group with your chosen population (5 points).

This section will be 1–2 pages. For this section, describe the basic tenants of one counseling theory (5 points). Reference/cite Gladding text. Concisely discuss the framework of the basics of the theory to demonstrate knowledge of the subject. Also, include how you will incorporate Motivational Interviewing (and cite) as this is also a requirement when addressing addictions.

Session Outlines (60 points)

These do NOT need to be in current APA or paragraph style. Structure the group sessions as a worksheet or outline to ensure easy reading. This section will be a total of 4–8 pages. Please follow the format below to ensure all information included.

Session 1

OBJECTIVE(S): List 1 to 3 specific objectives you would like to accomplish in this session. You must address the following objectives in the first session: Introductions (5 points), group guidelines (5 points), group goals (5 points) and individual goals (5 points) in this first session.

TIME ALLOTED: Set specific time.

SUPPLIES: List specific supplies (5 points).

GROUP SET-UP: Discuss specific group set up and rationale for group (5 points).

Per the rubric, each session objective must have a specific activity, exercise or process to address how it will be accomplished (5 points). Session objectives are narrower than group goals and are to be accomplished within an individual session. Additionally, please include how much time will be allotted for each activity.

For the first session, write how you will address introductions and group guidelines. What activity will you employ to ensure group members have been properly introduced and understand guidelines? Be sure to include actual guidelines you will have for your group.

Next, it is imperative to address your overarching group goals. Group goals are distinct from session objectives as they describe the basic purpose of the group and are to be kept in mind throughout the group process. What goals, informed by your theory and specific to your group population, will you work towards throughout the course of your group’s four sessions?

Lastly, demonstrate how you will ensure each member has voiced an individual goal they are working on.

Session 2

Session 3

Session 4

OBJECTIVE: List 1 to 3 specific objectives you would like to accomplish in this session. You must address the following objectives in the last session: review of group goals (5 points), individual goals (5 points), life application of group content (5 points) and feelings towards termination (5 points).

TIME ALLOTED: Set specific time

SUPPLIES: List specific supplies.

GROUP SET-UP: Discuss specific group set up and rationale for this set up.

This will be the termination session for the group. Per the rubric, you must review and assess group and individual goals. List an activity, exercise or process to demonstrate how this will be accomplished.

Lastly, demonstrate how the leader will ensure a review of what has been learned and how it will be applied to life. Additionally, address how the leader will facilitate processing feelings towards termination from group members and leaders.

** For each objective in each session, remember to list an activity to demonstrate how it will be accomplished. Write concisely and coherently while providing enough details to ensure your group can be easily replicated.

Screening (30 points)

This section will be 1 page. Explain the intended population desired for your group, giving as many details as possible (10 points). Next, address the criteria for who should not be in the group, providing as many details as possible (10 points).

In list or bullet format, include the screening questions you will use to select participants in your group. Be sure that your screening questions include the de-selection criteria and assess client’s readiness for group. See Gladding text for further information (10 points).

Informed Consent (40 points)

This does not need to be in current APA format. Develop this as you would develop an informed consent in your own counseling practice with you as the group leader. This section will be 1 page.

Develop an informed consent (5 points) addressing the following categories:

Confidentiality (5 points)

Discuss limits of confidentiality according to the ACA Code of Ethics.

Theoretical Orientation (5 points)

In a few sentences, explain the basics of your theoretical orientation in layman’s terms for your client to understand.

Nature, Purposes, prand Goals (5 points)

Explain the nature, purpose, and goals of the group.

Group Services (5 points)

Explain the services the group provides explaining risks and benefits one might encounter.

Roles and Responsibility of Leaders and Members (5 points)

Identify the roles and responsibility of the group leader and members.

Leader Qualifications (5 points)

List the qualifications of the group leader. Note: you are considered the group leader for this group. If the leader is a student, state that he/she will be receiving supervision.

Address of State Board of Counseling (5 points)

List the address of the state board of counseling to let clients know where they can file a complaint. Include a sentence or two explaining the reason the address is provided.

The informed consent is an important legal document and each section should adequately address the topics listed above. See section A.6 in the Best Practices Guidelines on Association for Specialists in Group Work’s website http://www.asgw.org/ for more information.

Outcomes Survey (20 points)

Per the rubric, develop a Likert scale and define the terms of the scale (10 points). This must be 1 page.

Next, devise a list of questions to measure if your interventions/activities implemented in session achieved your goals for the group. There needs to be one question for each objective in each session (10 points).

Problem Solving (40 points)

Use this final section to thoroughly address four potential problem areas you may encounter in group work. Current APA headings will ensure that each section is fully addressed. Be sure to describe the problem and how you will handle the member. This section will be 2–4 pages.
