A few years in summer vacation, I went to a missionary work with my church to Indonesia. I was nerves to go because I went with a medical team, but I had no professional medical knowledge. Also, I could sense that other people, “Adults”, who went with me did not really value me as the same volunteer. Even worse, some would think that I was an encumbrance for them. However, That atmosphere and people’s eyes stimulated me that I can prove that I could be beneficial for the team. Hence, I decided to do learn something that I could do, but not hard and not distracting people. After the consideration, I decided to learn how to make a balloon doll. I went to the event company to learn balloon tricks. I couldn’t learn many things but I mastered how to make a dog and a sword.

The day we arrived in Indonesia, I was confident what I was going to do. After we took a rest, and we went to a little town that has a poor medical system. Obviously, the “adults” ignored me on the first day of work. However, I did not care about the other’s views, and I took out the balloons and other tools out of my bag. I started to blew up the balloons and made dogs and swords. I walked closed to the kids who are terrified to get examined and passed a sword to get courage. I could see the kid smile, and the kid became brave enough to see the doctor. After I gave the balloon to the first kid, I could see the other kids wants to have the balloons with the limpid eyes and playfulness face. It was so busy to make balloons to satisfy every kid. Hopefully because of my effort, the kids at were not afraid to see the doctors, but I still could see the few kids were crying after they got a shot.

After all the work was over, we went back to our base camp and had a dinner. I could feel the “adults” treated me differently. They talked to me first and asked me about the work and the day. I was pleasant and upset at the same time because I proved myself that I could contribute to the team, but I was sad because I realized the world nobody treated me well due to my appearance until I proved myself. After I came back to America, I heard that they are going to the missionary work. I could not go because I was planned to stay for the next vacation, but I was very pleasant because the team decided to bring younger people to the work. I was proud myself and also thankful to the team that they changed their mind because It is actually hard to change the rule for the group. I learned that if I put my entire effort on something, I could do anything in future through the experience.
