ADV 225 Activity #11: Crafting Quotes for a News Release

DUE: BY 5:00 P.M. FRIDAY, NOV. 3, 2017

Your news release project (Writing Project #3) requires two quotes. Public relations practitioners routinely “craft” quotes for sources that appear in news releases. Quotes are crafted to advance the story, make it more appealing to journalists and their audience, and deliver unsubstantiated material that requires an attribution.

Of all messages that appear in a news release, quotes are the most likely to be used verbatim. They are the most powerful part of a news release, and must be crafted strategically to be effective. Crafting a quote based on the verb “excited” or “honored” will result in an INEFFECTIVE quote. Based on the assignment/prompt for Writing Project #3, use the following questions to challenge yourself to go beyond the obvious and craft quotes that help promote the release’s strategic goal.

QUOTE #1 – Homer Simpson

Speaker:

Role in News Announcement:

Why is the news announcement “exciting” to the speaker?

What is the speaker trying to promote/share?

What does the speaker gain through news coverage?

What unsubstantiated fact or facts must be included in the release for it to make sense and/or achieve its strategic goal?

Use the response from one or more of the above to craft a message that represents the speaker. Include your drafted quote below. Render the language in a conversational tone, but be sure it is grammatically correct.
