To do:

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this activity, students should be able (in writing) to:

· Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between one's self and one's culture and/or community (relative to anomie, rationalization, and technology).

· Define, explain, and apply the concepts of anomie (Durkheim) and rationalization (Weber).

· Demonstrate the relationship between technology and social interaction.

Specifics of the Activity:

You are to answer each of the 6 questions below in complete sentences and you must cite at least one time –from either the information and resources contained within Module 6 or a dictionary-- within each of your answers. I’m looking for 6-8 sentences to answer each question.

1. Define anomie and then also define rationalization.

2. Think about today versus twelve years ago: List 2 ways/reasons that technology has created more anomie in society (we are less connected) and then provide the flip-side to that by listing/providing 2 ways/reasons that technology has minimized the effects of anomie in society today (and we are actually more connected).

3. Define empathy and then also define compassion.

4. Think about how interaction filtered through technology (i.e. text messages, social media, online chat, etc.) may limit our abilities to be empathetic and compassionate. Then, list and describe 3 examples of how technologically filtered interaction limits our capacity to be empathetic and/or compassionate.

5. List and explain 3 ways that television programming, the Internet, and/or social media may have facilitated the spread of rationalization and the dehumanizing effects of bureaucracy.

6. Is bureaucracy more efficient than it is dehumanizing –or is it more dehumanizing than it is efficient? List 2 examples of how it is more efficient and 2 examples of how it is more dehumanizing.

MLA Style.
