Activity 3
Evaluating Developmental Toys for Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers
For this activity, you will use your knowledge about infants, toddlers, and preschoolers to evaluate a website featuring developmental toys for infants and toddlers.
You should visit this website sponsored by Fisher Price, www.fisher-price.com/en_US/index.html , which presents suggested toys and activities for babies according to their age and developmental level. Once you access the website, click on Age-by-Age Playtime Guide, then select two ages or age ranges and answer the following questions for each:
(1) What developmental information is presented on the website? Is it consistent with research presented in the text in Chapters 4, 5, & 6? Be specific about linkages between your textbook and the website. You will need to cite both sources.
(2) How do the recommended toys appeal to infants’, toddlers’, and/or preschoolers' developing learning/cognitive capacities? Be specific by discussing individual toys on the website. What learning capacities/cognitive abilities are being encouraged by the toys?
(3) Do the featured toys promote perceptual development? How? Be specific about individual toys on the website.
(4) Based on what you have learned, are the toys appropriate for the specified age range? Why or why not? Cite your resources. Which ones are most appropriate and why? Be specific.
(5) Which toys would you buy for your child? Why? Are there any that that you wouldn't buy? Why?
Note: You must copy and paste the Fisher-Price website into a new browser in order to access the website.
