USE THIS TO CITE THE LECTERS from my notes

1. Which source gets cited in the reference page when you use an indirect source – the original source or the secondary source? (.5 pt.)

You are required to differentiate works by the same author. It is quite common to refer to the same author(s) repeatedly even though you might use different publications or lectures by the same author(s). You will need to differentiate the lectures from our class in your in-text citations.

For example, if you cite the “defining the global village” lecture and then later cite the “media and cultural globalization” lecture, you need to make sure those citations are uniquely identifiable in the text. The best way to differentiate lectures by the same lecturer is to give each citation a unique letter. For example, look at the following sentences:

According to lecture, McLuhan’s conception of the global village was optimistic: he believed that media will ultimately bring the people of the world together and eradicate cultural differences (Miller, 2018a). Yet, McLuhan failed to take into account the ways in which the global village would lead to cultural convergence: the domination and eventual collapse of certain cultures (Miller, 2018b).

In the sentences above, the first lecture citation has the letter “a” and the second citation has the letter “b” in order to communicate to the reader that those citations refer to different lectures (which are cited as two unique references in the references page as shown below).

On the reference page, the citations would appear as such:

Miller, B. (2018a). Defining the global village. COMM 200: The New Media Society. Lecture

conducted from the University of Massachusetts Boston, Boston, MA.

Miller, B. (2018b). Media and cultural globalization. COMM 200: The New Media Society. Lecture

conducted from the University of Massachusetts Boston, Boston, MA.
