    Explanation: The pH scale is a measurement to determine if a substance is a base or acid. The "pH" is an acronym for potential of hydrogen. The pH of a substance is measured from 1-14, if the pH is between  1 and 6.9 the substance is acidic, if the number is between 7.1 and 14 it is a base and finally if the number is at 7.0 pH it is just water or neutral pH. In everyday life you could either use or consume some of these substances that are considered acids, these would be coffee or orange juice, both being put under 6.9 pH. For chemist it is very important for them to have a good grasp on what pH is, many job fields use all sorts of chemist who utilize the pH scale to determine substances origins. In the medical field both doctors and nurses need to understand the pH scale when taking a patients blood or urine test, this can help determine the health of the patient and if they have any health issues that could be displayed in either of the tests.   

      Background: The discovery of the pH scale was in 1909 by a man named Soren Sorensen, he created the pH scale while conducting experiments with beer at the Carlsberg research lab in Copenhagen. He was researching what made certain beverages stronger than other and in turn created the pH scale to put these substances on a measurable plane. After the discovery of pH and the creation of the pH scale many different scientist began to introduce it into their own work as you can see in agriculture, farmers and botanists use the pH scale to determine soil acidity, or the medical field with the example I used earlier in my writing in which doctors and nurses use the pH scale to determine the acidity of a patients blood or urine and those are only two examples of fields that utilize the pH scale. 

     A buffer: A buffer is simple to understand, it is a large mixture of both a weak acid and a weak base, it tend to effect strong bases more by considerably lowering the pH, but will not effect a strong acid nearly as much. A buffer is mostly used to counteract a very strong base.
