Introduction
As a member of a research team or as a researcher, it is believed that most of the questions that are asked and then their answers sought tend to lead one into unexplored waters of knowledge. This is actually what everyone keeps on doing throughout the years that past and will be done in the years that come. However, once the new information is gotten, the researcher that is in charge will have to face new challenges and responsibilities. “With intellectual discovery and collaboration come new responsibilities.” As the researcher plans to conduct and then disseminate the results that were discovered, he/she ought to be accountable both to his/her colleagues as well as the public. Trust comes a long way in this topic because researchers need to trust each other in delivering any information that is required. Therefore, academic integrity and professional ethics comes in whereby every researcher is required to follow their rules to the latter.
Body
When we include the phrases academic integrity and academic writing, we directly end up connecting them in some way. This is because all academic writers are required to possess the virtue of academic integrity. Academic integrity in this case implies to the ability of the academic writer to adequately acknowledge the owner of any source that they use to get any kind of information. The relationship between the two comes in when an academic writer endures the challenge which demands that he can use another person’s work but ensure that something original comes from it, and then the source has to be stated or else it is stated as plagiarism. Every academic writer needs to depict the virtue of academic integrity in order to be a good scholar (Lund Uni, 2016).
Professional practices and scholarly ethics also have a relationship but cannot be considered to be the same. Professional practices are the expectations that professionals have from their colleagues and describe a specific behavior that is said to be appropriate by every member. Scholarly ethics on the other hand describes both implicit and explicit professional prospects that are put up by specific fields to guarantee that work done and behavior shown are congruent with moral prospects (Lee, L. M., 2018). These two are related in such a way that they are both aimed at ensuring that the practices by professionals for the good of others and themselves. Scholarly ethics can always be regarded as part of a professional practice and they work together to reinforce ethical behavior (Ahmadi, F., 2011).
As a student, maintaining integrity and ethics in school is always associated with a number of things. First, I would plan ahead to avoid procrastination and lack of time so that I would not be tempted to cheat. I would also check on my decision making so that I would ensure I do my own work properly and diligently study for quizzes and exams because these are usually the cause of lacking integrity and ethics (Illinois Uni., 2020). In most cases, I have decided that I will be consulting my professor when it comes to things I am unsure of; for instance, I would check with my professors to know more about their expectations for citing sources as well as asking for their permission before I share my work with any of my classmates. Getting the instructions every time and following them will give me the ability to practice ethics and integrity at all ties as a student. I would also ensure that I read and understand the instructions in my assignments carefully.
Moreover, as a nurse, I ought to have integrity and ethics all my life. In that case, I have chosen to be true to myself first. Just as the great William Shakespeare believed that “being true to one’s own self, first and foremost, meant all else would fall into an honest place.” Once I am trust myself, I believe that I will develop my own code ethics so that the ones expected by the hospital where I work will be easier to adhere to (Barker, L., 2016). I would maintain this truth to myself and I trust it will embody these two qualities. In nursing, I know that integrity and ethical behavior would come organically; hence being a nurse means that these two things should make up who you are. Genuinely, no matter any one is watching or not you have to work as hard as possible to preserve integrity and that is the path I am choosing today: and that would make it easier to care for patients.
In academic writing, I believe that there are some actions that normally help in making the work more authentic. Grammarly is a website that helps students to ensure their work is complete and errorless. Apparently, it also helps in citing as well as adding sources. When it cmes to paraphrasing, it refers to taking another person’s work and putting them in your own words (Paraphraser, 2017). This will ensure that you do not use their direct words which would show lack of integrity. SafeAssign is a also a website which provides information about the authenticity of a document. It typically shows the areas where you have avoided integrity and helps to change it. Using the three technological advancements would help to afford integrity because they provide ways of making the work specific to you as he academic writer.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I would start by accepting that as a student I need to practice integrity and ethics. Also, as an upcoming nurse, I will be required to practice professionalism, ethics and scholarly integrity. I believe that practicing all these actions is part of becoming a good citizen and colleague. As students, most people tend to forget that ethics and integrity are paramount, but from this document it is clear that a course like nursing would require the two virtues from the word go. Having discussed my professional development plan and talking about my mentors and role models, I have made a vow that I would not only work to ensure I succeed but also to strengthen my professionalism and ethical virtues.
