A survey of Image Compression Techniques Using DCT and DWT

Abstract

The growth of cloud computing and smart phone industries has led to generation of huge volume of digital data. Efficient storing, transmission and retrieval mechanism of digital data by adopting a good compression technique is always required and it remains a challenge. Image compression is a type of data compression applied to digital images, to reduce their cost for storage or transmission. The compression technique can be Lossy/Lossless. Lossy compression technique achieves higher compression factor with loss of information and Lossless techniques achieve lower compression ratio without loss of information. This survey paper discusses the few state-of-the-art Lossy compression techniques such as Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and hybrid compression technique using both DCT and DWT.
