SECURITY CONCERNS IN IOT 2

Abstract

Security is important for IoT products and it must be given upmost importance before releasing the products into the market. The products released into market based on IoT is increasing a lot and the market value for IoT products is $200 billion dollars in 2018 and it is expected to rise to $1 trillion dollars by 2025. There are a lot of products that are using IoT technology such as smart refrigerators, smart watches, controlling household devices using voice commands, smart vehicles, and a lot more. There are a lot of security concerns regarding IoT devices and it is mainly because of lack of testing for the products before releasing into market, lack of updates, hardware issues, lack of user knowledge because users do not know how to use products in an efficient way, creating IoT devices with a default password across all products, devices not validating SSL certificates, no proper encryption which leads to data loss, no proper update over the air (OTA). In the olden days, these are the issues with computers and laptops but most of these problems are reduced by inbuilt firewalls and security features in computers which is lacking in IoT devices. Every product that is connected to Internet can be hacked or is vulnerable to any type of attacks and IoT devices is also a part of it. In my final project, I would like to explain what are the methods that are implementing currently to ensure the security of the devices and what more can be done to make the products not prone to hacking in the future.
