Abstract

Over the years, innovations and advancements in technology have significantly impacted job design and the overall labor market. However, this paper presents a literature review to understand the extent to which technology has affected job design to gain insight into this topic. Four major topics have been covered: the impact of technology on organization and work structures, the impact of technology on job design, labor market polarization, and the pros and cons of the effects of technology on job design. From the evidence collected from scholarly sources, technology has propagated the centralization of specific jobs, increased organizational productivity, and facilitated the automation of repetitive tasks. However, it has also polarized the labor market and increased wage inequality. Hence, there are heightened concerns regarding the future of job design amid increasing automation and the development of high-skill jobs. It is recommended that organizations promote continual learning for workers, have a regular review of the business and operating models, and have a frequent appraisal of their operations to find ways of taking advantage of the benefits offered by technology without getting significantly hurt by its adverse effects. Finally, technology’s long-term impact should be investigated to evaluate its psychological and physical impact on workers.

Keywords: Technology, job design, wage inequality, productivity, automation.
