The case study on the best person for the job contains two major ethical issues. Firstly Art's act of teaching transferrable courses where he seems to have fewer interests as in the case of teaching non-transferable courses like accounting. The other and major ethical issue found in the case study is Mary's incapability to choose the right candidate to replace the outgoing teacher. This becomes a problem since; the dean of the business department seems to have more power and shows some favors to one candidate thus rendering the human resource manager powerless to choose the qualified candidate to occupy the vacancy.
The stakeholders in the case study are Evans who is the dean of the business department and David who works as a lab tutor at Youngstown College. David in his working experience in the college has interacted with many students and builds a friendship with Evan who thinks he should occupy a teaching accounting program in the university after Art's retirement. In the discussion on who to replace Art, Evans seems to propose David to take the position although he is not yet qualified and he even makes efforts of documenting qualification for the position that favors David. However, Mary seems to disagree with the actions since it does not align with the standards and principles as HR though has no way to control the case.
Ethical frameworks, standards, and principles are important in supporting the decision making process. In the case study, a duty-based approach emerges as an ethical framework where the HR Mary seems to perform her duty in choosing the right candidate to replace Art. However, her ability is cut off by Evans who comes with paperwork favoring David to occupy the position. In this situation, Mary should not put a signature on the paper needs to dismiss the paperwork since the candidate is unqualified to be considered.
