Describe Qualitative Measures In Articles
OBJECTIVE: You will be able to identify social validity measures in 5 applied behavior analysis single-subject design( SSED) articles
STEP 1: Review this basic definition and rationale.
RATIONALE: One of the hallmarks of applied behavior analysis, articulated by Montrose Wolf (1978), is that clients and other consumers of behavior analysis understand and admire the goals, outcomes and methods of an intervention. He recommended that the social validity of an applied behavior analysis study should be assessed in three ways:
· The social significance of the behavior change goals
· The appropriateness of the intervention:
· And the social importance of the results.
(Cooper, Heron & Heward, 2020)
Therefore, another aspect of your being able to critically analyze a behavior analytic study is to identify the social validity measures.
STEP 2: Watch this video on social validity and client preference in ABA and then answer the questions that follow:
Question 1: A simple way to assess social validity is through: (select all that apply)
a) Frequency measures
b) Partial interval measures
c) Questionnaires
d) Interviews
Question 2: Questionnaires/ surveys to assess social validity can include (select all that apply)
a) Open ended questions
b) Multiple choice questions
c) Rating scales
d) Premade questionnaires
Question 3: When creating your own sociability assessment, Wolf (1978), well suggested that you consider the following. (select all that apply):
a) The statistical significance of your outcomes
b) The functional relationship between your dependent and independent variable
c) The social significance of the goals
d) The social importance of the effects
Step 3 Now, let’s practice. Let’s look at five single subject research design studies and identify the sociability measures in each study.
HERE IS AN EXAMPLE:
STUDY: using video feedback to improve horseback skills

Step 4 : identifying social validity measures in a scenario
In Manny’s research study on the effects of preference on stereotyped behavior and correct responding, he develops a measures to assess the impact of his study. He measured correct responding with an accuracy measure, and he measured stereotyped behavior with an interval measure. At the end of the study, he has experts view videos of the sessions and provided them with a rating scale to measure this subjective impression of changes in correct responding and stereotyped behavior. He also asked the therapist to rate how easy and effective the preference assessment procedures where to implement in the study.
For this scenario, please indicate which of the following are measures of social validity.
1, Were the accuracy measures of correct responding a social validity measure?
· Yes
· No
2. Were the interval measures of stereotyped behavior a social validity measure?
· Yes
· No
3 Were the rating scales completed by expert evaluators of their subjective impressions a social validity measure?
· Yes
· No
4. Were the rating scales completed by the therapist of their impressions of the procedures a social validity measure?
· Yes
· No
