This scholar article talks about Brush tail possums were first imported from Australia in 1858 and they settle in New Zealand very quickly. And the main reason to import possums is to develop possum fur industry. Released possums flourished in both the native and exotic forests in New Zealand. As the population of possums keep rising, New Zealand’s primary exports earners, beef and dairy have been threatened. In order to change this situation, the government start take actions to the population of possum. People start hunt possum, poison them and all kind of way to kill them. And their skin will transform to clothing, food, accessories, home appeal. Because of the status of possum as a pest, possums’ fur can be a solution to this problem. People who purchase possum fur and wear it depicted as environmentally friendly and loyal to their country. The possums fur has been used for fashion design for many years. I want to refer this as my resource because there is connection relates to my point of view. I advocate that fur industry should be eliminate to benefit our environment and for our next generation. However, the strategy to protect the environment by New Zealand government is to develop the fur industry. So our purpose is the same but our actions defer. The original purpose of import possums is to develop fur industry, so the responsibility has to be taken by the government. Economic progress is the only benefit. The destruction of the ecological balance is broken and it takes a long time to repair itself. This is in contradiction with the development of sustainable resources. Keep the balance of nature and respect animals’ life will be the best solution for human and biology.

The second resource I am going to use is a scholarly research paper by some scientists. They mainly focus on how to replace the toxic chemicals that have been used in the leather making process. The author knows that  leather industry is globally facing challenges owing to the pollution it causes to the environment. The monitoring form the pollution control authorities and increased awareness in the society is increasing pressure on the industry to adopt cleaner processing methods. And the commercial leather-making process involves sequential set of unit operations which includes pretanning, tanning, post tanning and finishing. At each stage, variety of chemicals are used and expelled out. The dehair process involves a lot of sulfide and “extensive use of toxic sulphide imparts serious health hazards to the workers.” The author found that she can transfer this chemical process to enzymatic for dehair process which would decrease much toxic chemicals use. I am a student major in Chemistry and MCB and her way to develop this process is a very brilliant idea because she use bacteria strain, a biotic way to reduce the sodium sulphide use and weak acidic enzyme to make the process more stable. This is a totally new concept for me and for my essay. I never used this perspective to think before. If we can reduce the chemical use in fur industry could we still develop this business. And as I read through this whole article. I dont think so. The enzyme and biotic way is environmental friendly but as a owner of fur company I would believe that much cost for dehair the leather is unnecessary. If I spend more on the process to making leather then I have to increase my price on my products. My competitor company did not use this process and the price is lower. That would cause the market unbalance. This technology is not yet mature and has not been popularized throughout the industry. This is a strong evidence to prove that this situation can not be improve in short period of time. So the most efficient way would still be eliminate fur industry.

The third resource is a scholarly article I found online. In the beginning of the article, the author talked about more and more people start to against wearing leather made clothing after the watched the video about animal being skinned alive in China. And then he start to illustrate the fur production is highly detrimental to the environment. It is intensely polluting by talk about the ecosystem separately--WATER and AIR. As the most important two element we need to consume daily to provide us how serious the chemicals can threat our life. However, these thought is more personal and bias. So the article move the direction to the chemical that have been used in the leather bleach process. These evidences are exactly what I need for my article. Most informations I can refer in my article.
