FINAL RESEARCH PAPER
For your final project, you will compose a 6-8 page research paper that develops and expands on one of the topics from our course.
TOPICS
I have provided some sample research questions for you to choose from. You’re also welcome to choose your own topic.
1. Kartar Singh Sarabha (Ghadar Party leader): Who was Sarabha and how did he contribute to early South Asian American history?
2. Punjabi-Mexicans of central California: Research the development of the Punjabi-
Mexican community in California in the early 1900s. How did this unusual community form and how does the story of their cross-racial marriages connect to early South Asian American history?
3. South Asian American comedians: How are contemporary South Asian American
comedians like Aziz Ansari, Hari Kondabolu and D’Lo using humor to challenge racism and/or heterosexism? (You can focus on one comedian in particular, or discuss several).
4. South Asian American Republicans: Over the last ten years, Indian American
politicians Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley have served as state and federal leaders. What are these politicians’ views about immigration? How do their policies resist or enforce racism and xenophobia in the U.S.?
5. Post-9/11 Islamaphobia: How have the Homeland Security policies established after
9/11 impacted the South Asian American community? How do these policies connect to President Trump’s current policies and initiatives?
FORMAT
Thesis: 20 points
• Once you’ve chosen your paper topic from the list above, your thesis should present an argument about that topic (in other words, your topic and thesis are not the same thing).
• Your thesis should be a clearly phrased sentence that appears at the end of your introductory paragraph and precisely describes the argument that you will develop in your paper.

Supporting Paragraphs: 50 points • Each of your body paragraphs should develop and refine your argument, rather than
repeat it. • Illustrate the validity of your thesis statement by including and analyzing relevant
historical context and purposefully chosen quotes from research sources.
Citations: 15 points • A minimum of 3 critical citations are required for this paper (only one of these may be
drawn from the required readings on the syllabus). • Include a Works Cited page, formatted according to MLA Style (see the “General
Resources” section of iLearn for MLA Style guidelines).
Grammar & Style: 15 points • Required length is 6-8 pages (6 full pages minimum) • Your paper should be double-spaced, using Times New Roman 12-point font • Please use 1-inch margins • Your paper can be submitted as an MS Word document or as a PDF file • Proofread for grammar errors and typos.
