Mentoring and Peer Support

Adolescence is a time of trials and tribulations. Teens are dealing with the formation of self and identifying who they are in the world. They are also experiencing biological changes that create mood swings and at times emotional outbursts. Interventions for this group can be challenging, as adolescents often avoid asking for assistance. This avoidance is due to their desire to look normal and fit in. As a result, peer group and mentoring programs appear to be the most beneficial in helping adolescents. These settings offer the support teens need along with the validation that they are not alone in their struggles. Some of the main concerns for adolescents are depression, suicide, self-esteem, and self-confidence.

Your Answer:

Mentoring and Peer Support

The internet- based intervention theory for adolescent group of population is the cognitive behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a treatment intervention used to effective therapy for adolescent and mental mentoring practices.  According to the article of reference, a client is subjected to mental exercises whose aim is to interrupt the pattern that is behind the undesired adolescent behavior (Martin, 2016). This theory is based on the idea that how we think (cognition), how we feel (emotion) and how we act (behavior) all interact together in determining and developing the best intervention approach for the adolescent patient. The theory of behaviorism is generally the acquisition of new behavior based on environmental conditions that one is surrounded with (LeCroy & Williams, 2013). This particular treatment is based on the Cognitive behavioral theory which explains that the only way to change behavior is to establish a new routine.

The difference between this intervention and the use of medication is that Cognitive behavioral therapy takes longer to achieve the desired results (LeCroy & Williams, 2013). Strengths of the cognitive behavioral therapy comprise the fact that this intervention involves no medication and also the fact that it brings an effective long lasting result. Weaknesses include the fact that it takes long to achieve the desired results and also the fact that desired results are not guaranteed by the interventions (Martin, 2016).

Depression and Suicide Intervention

When working with adolescents you will likely be faced with issues of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation and even attempts. For youth between the ages of 10 and 24, suicide is the third leading cause of death in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). It is essential to understand the risks associated with teen suicide and intervention strategies to address this issue.

Post a review of the literature on adolescent depression and suicide and identify an evidence-based intervention that addresses these issues. Then, apply that intervention to either the Brady or Tiffani case. Describe the possible risk factors the client presents that would make him or her at risk for depression and suicide. Then, plan an intervention for that client to address these issues.

Your answer: Depression and Suicide Intervention

The social worker are faced with vast challenges when dealing with adolescent and suicidal group of population as they behaviors are easily changes and varies with different factors. It is essential to recognize the risks associated with teen suicide crisis in regards to adolescent in order to develop a well strategized and affective intervention for the group (LeCroy & Williams, 2013). Intervention model External link is used when someone is dealing with an acute crisis. The model includes seven stages: assess safety and lethality, rapport building, problem identification, address feelings, create alternatives, develop an action plan, and follow up. This social work practice model is usually used with customers who are expressing suicidal ideation. This could be the best intervention for Brady as this could be in apposition to provide the effective intervention for harsh parental environment that he was exposed to (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014).

There are some risks characteristic that client tent to portray that might contribute to depression or anxiety in this stage. Seclusion or isolating your self from the social setting is one of the behavioral risk factors that are attributed to suicidal cases for the adolescent group of population. General Lower self esteem is the other risk factors that are attributed to the increasing suicidal cases among the adolescent group (LeCroy & Williams, 2013). The social worker can be able to evaluate and identify these traits using the crisis intervention model then develop strategies like self disclosure or self reflection to facilitate the effective treatment process for the patient. These platforms will generate a lot of information to facilitate inclusions and proper development of invention model (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014)

Hi Gerry,

Work #2

2. We need some more examples of how this model could be used with Brady. How do you determine that is is suitable for him, and could you describe exactly how the stages will apply to work with him as a client?
