Business Requirements Analysis Assignment 4

1 of 4

Assignment 4 (Individual)

Total mark: 20 - Contribution to the final mark: 20% Case Study LovatoTaste is a chain of four small restaurants in and around Melbourne. It is owned and

managed by Mr. and Mrs. Lovato and their family. They have been successfully running this

business for over 20 years. LovatoTaste provides a range of pizza, pasta, and traditional

Italian dishes. Each of their restaurants has a stable local customer base. Except public

holidays, from Sunday to Thursday they are open during 11am-3pm for lunch, then 5pm-

10pm for dinner. Every Friday and Saturday, they are open from 11am-11pm. Customers

can dine in or order takeaway foods. Each of the restaurants is managed by one of their four

sons and has their own chefs, kitchen staff, waiters and waitresses. Usually the sons and

their children manage all the business operations and perform all office tasks.

Recently, Mr. and Mrs. Lovato retired. The chain of four restaurants were taken over by

their sons and their families. The sons and especially grandchildren upgraded their

restaurants and reviewed foods and services. They are aware of the increasing competition

in the foodservice industry and appreciate the need to invest in technology. Therefore, they

are in the process of reviewing their business growth plan and technology investment.

The Lovatos run a simple website for LovatoTaste. The website lists their restaurants’

locations, photos, menu and contact details. They find the updating of the website’s content

and responding to customers’ emails to be unstructured and time consuming. In addition to

the website, they also advertise their restaurants via local newspapers. They have also been

increasingly using email to communicate with each other and local suppliers. The Lovatos

have heard about possibilities of using technology for customer engagement, customer

loyalty and retention, online food ordering and delivery tracking, self-ordering software,

order inventory management software, social media, and so on. They are also aware of the

data analytics trend and would like to explore analytics solutions as well. For example, if

they can predict the number of customers and their food demands, they can reduce food

waste and increase profits.

LovatoTaste is unsure what might work best for their business while minimising possible

impacts on their current business operations. They want to develop a strategic approach to

technology innovation in their restaurants. LovatoTaste would like to use the services of

Business Requirements Analysts (you) to help them understand the current state of their

business and explore a viable technology solution.

In your Business Requirements Analysis process, use information extracted from the above

case study description and make assumptions if you need additional details. Document your

assumptions.

Business Requirements Analysis Assignment 4

2 of 4

Assignment Objective Your objective is to conduct some independent research on the topic and the domain under

study. There are two tasks:

1. Propose an approach to requirements elicitation. To do this, you need to suggest a technology solution, identify end users and propose an approach to gathering users’

requirements.

2. Modelling task. Based on your student ID number, you must choose a modelling technique/approach to be used in your submission. Next, identify a suitable aspect of the

case study and explore it in depth. Finally, create a model that illustrates and explains the

(wisely) selected aspect of the case.

Task 1. Propose an approach to requirements elicitation (10 marks) The proposal should select an approach to collecting and eliciting users’ requirements in

undertaking the business analysis exercise for LovatoTaste. The proposal should include the

following aspects:

1. Name the proposed technology system for LovatoTaste 2. List the end users of the proposed system and their characteristics 3. Describe two methods to collect and elicit their requirements 4. Suggest how to apply each of these methods to elicit users’ requirements for the

proposed system

5. Highlight potential benefits and issues you may face as a business analyst when using each method and how to overcome.

6. Recommend an approach to collecting and eliciting users’ requirements in undertaking the business analysis exercise for LovatoTaste

Week 4’s materials and additional readings (Topic 4) would be useful, cite and include references that you use in completing this task.

Task 2. Modelling Task (10 marks) How to choose one specific technique/approach for modelling the case?

Use one specific technique, which is to be chosen from the following list based on your

Deakin student number. Your student number is in the following form: dddddddXY

Depending on the last two digits of your student number (X and Y) you have a choice of one of two modelling approaches.

X Technique/approach 1 Current SWOT analysis and strategy formulation (Week 2)

2 Stakeholder chart and importance-influence chart (Week 3)

3 House of quality (Week 4)

4 Use cases diagram and event flow description for one complex use case (Week 5)

5 Use cases diagram and sequence diagram for one complex use case (Weeks 5 and 6)

6 Domain class diagram (Week 6)

7 BPM using BPMN 2.0 (Week 7).

8 Business analytics proposals (Week 8)

9 Develop eight user stories with themes and epics (Week 9)

0 Develop and evaluate four user stories using INVEST (Week 10)

Business Requirements Analysis Assignment 4

3 of 4

Assume Mary’s student number is 234123770 and Lary’s student number is 234123716

• Mary can use either BPM (X=7) or “INVEST” (Y=0). • Lary can use either “SWOT analysis” (X=1) or “Domain class diagram” (Y=6)

If the last two digits of your student number are similar, Y is added by 1.

• For example, if student number of Kathy is 254823777, she can use either BPM (X=7) or “business opportunity matrix” (Y + 1 = 8).

Important Notes In your assignment include:

1. A proposed approach to requirements elicitation 2. Your model 3. Assumptions

Depending on the model chosen, your solution will cover either the entire domain or one

aspect of it. Therefore, it is up to you to decide the scope of your solution, to demonstrate

specific details or be very holistic. You can refer back to the weekly workshop to decide

which approach suits your model. For example, if your task is BPM then you should develop

a to-be BPM for a business process that the new system will support. Use the relevant

workshop form for the modelling task. Use the relevant workshop form for the modelling

task.

Also depending on the model chosen, you then decide on the order of the assignment tasks.

You may need to undertake Modelling task first then Propose an approach to requirements

elicitation or the other way around. For example, Lary’s student number is 234123716, he

can use either “SWOT analysis” (X=1) or “Domain class diagram” (Y=6) for the modelling

task. If Lary selects “SWOT analysis” then he should undertake SWOT analysis, formulate

strategies and propose a system as an initiative to implement the recommended strategy,

identity the users for the system, then propose an approach to gathering requirements from

the users. If Lary however selects “Domain class diagram” then he should propose an

approach to gathering requirements from the users before undertaking the modelling task.

In total, your assignment should not be more than 2500 words. We also expect no more

than 5 pages.

Rubric The following rubric will be used to assess your work. For more details about each

model/technique, you may refer to workshop rubric for each model.
