You are to write this grant as a small start-up company supported by /affiliated with the University of Adelaide. Your grant is to focus on the implementation of small- scale (off-grid) renewable power generation systems in East Timor, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, or Vanuatu. You are to consider hydro, wind, wave, tidal, or a combination of any of the four. You can also integrate solar and battery storage. (Realistically, wave and tidal aren’t really suitable, BUT I’m not going to limit your options and it will not impact your mark). However, I will limit you to a maximum of four pages. You can write less if you want, but not more. The below is from the grant body:

“OFID’s grant program includes technical assistance for small-scale social schemes, sponsorship for research and other intellectual pursuits, and emergency relief aid. Aligning its scope with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG3, “to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages, OFID’s grant program prioritizes initiatives that address food security, energy poverty and water-related challenges. OFID has set up special programs that respond to the urgent and unique challenges presented by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and non- communicable diseases, Palestine and lack of reliable energy. The latter is a particular priority and complements the financing provided through other mechanisms in support of OFID’s Energy for the Poor Initiative.”

With this as the only information provided (which is painful, but real so that is what we are teaching you) you are to complete the below information, as part of the grant. For each section below, I have provided an explanation of what I expect (and what I’ll mark to), plus the weighting of that section. 3.1 Project justification [20%]

Very briefly explain what you are proposing in order to justify why your project should be funded. Describe how will it achieve the purpose of the grant (look at the blurb above and ensure you address what is important to them).

3.2 Background of beneficiary region [10%] What country are you looking at? What region? What community? Provide detail to support the idea that your project is needed.

3.3 General objectives [5%] What are the general objectives to the project? Just write the broad objectives here, since the next section is where you provide details.

3.4 Specific objectives [20%]

What are the specific objectives? These are the details to what you list in Section 3.3.

3.5 Envisaged activities to be carries out [20%]

How are you going to achieve the specific objectives? What are you actually going to do?

3.6 Beneficiaries (direct and indirect) [5%] Provide details of the client/end-users/beneficiaries. It could be that you are looking at communities, but the government might also be a beneficiary. If you are looking at grid-connected systems or off-grid systems, are there additional beneficiaries to consider?

3.7 Implementation / Supervision and Reporting Don’t write this bit 3.8 Total project budget [5%]

This might be difficult, but what is the budget? How much will staff cost? How much will equipment cost? You only need to provide detail to the level of larger systems. For example, if you were to do a pilot scale for pumped hydro with PV, then I would expect to see costs for: piping and installation, reservoirs, pumps and generators, PV cells.

3.9 Expected project duration [5%] How long will the project last, including any post-implementation monitoring and evaluating.

3.10 Project co-financer Don’t write this bit 3.11 Other remarks Don’t write this bit The remaining 10% is based on quality of writing. Therefore, if your English isn’t great, then you can still get full marks for all the other parts (3.1-3.9), as long as I can still understand it and you have all the details required.
