Assignment 1: Sampling, Article Review, and Scales of Measurement

Every assignment must include the FCE title page. Please consult the  FCE Standard Format for Written Assignments  for additional formatting requirements for assignments.

The next pages should be organized in your Word document so that it indicates the Section and the question. It should be organized like this:

Section 1

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Section 2

<please write brief answer in each of the boxes…OK to stretch boxes as needed).

Section 3

1a.

1b.

1c.

1d.

2a.

2b.

2c.

2d.

Section I.

Answer the following statements: (1 raw point per question; 5 raw points in total)

1. In your own words, define a Population.

2. In your own words, define a Sample.

3. Provide an example of a research scenario (use your dissertation scenario!!) and then discuss the Population and the Sample in the context of the scenario (2-3 sentences).

4. Define Bias in the context of research (2-3 sentences).

5. Identify, define, and provide an example of the four levels of measurement.

Retrieve and read the guide entitled Overview Sampling Procedures published by the division of System Managements for Human Services from Fairfax Co., VA, available in this website https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/demographics/sites/demographics/files/assets/researchtools/overview%20of%20sampling%20procedures%202017.pdf .

Section II.

Use the information provided in the publication to complete the following table: (1 raw point per box; 12 raw points in total)

Sampling Procedures

Sampling Type

Probability Sampling or Nonprobability Sampling

Characteristics of the methodology

Limitations of the methodology

Create a scenario where you would employ the sampling procedure

Convenience Sampling

Simple Random Sampling

Stratified Random Sampling

Section III. Next, choose 1 (one) recent quantitative article (published in 2015 or later) from a peer-reviewed journal and answer the following questions: (1 raw point per letter; 11 points in total)

1. Sampling Procedures

a) Describe the characteristics of the population studied.

b) Identify sampling procedures (e.g., simple random sampling), and explain why it was selected.

c) Indicate the size of the sample.

d) What was the response/participation rate? How did those who responded or participated differ from those who did not? How was this addressed?

2. Data Analysis

a) What statistical analysis was conducted?

b) What were the units of analysis (e.g., individual, group, or program)?

c) What was the DV and what was the level of measurement for the DV?

d) Was the information presented in the figures and tables clear and was it discussed in the text?

3. Findings

a) What were the study findings? Were they discussed and described clearly and accurately? Were explanations proposed for any anticipated and unanticipated findings? Were the results substantively important? Were conclusions well grounded in the findings?

b) Was the study conducted in an objective fashion? Is there any evidence of bias?

4. a) Full reference of the article (remember to use APA style!)

To obtain the points you earned, I will create this ratio: (# raw points earned) / 28 . Next I will multiply the ratio times 15. For example, if you get 20 raw points, then you earn (20/28) X 15 = 10.7 or 11 points (I always round up if the number after the decimal if 5 or higher!)

Total Points Earned: /15 Points Possible
