Assessment #1: A Sample of a good assessment

The Competing Values Framework survey (Quinn et al. 2011) provides a helpful self-assessment

and it is a very good tool for reflecting the own personal skills and can be used for self-

improvement.

In my case the CVF shows that the four quadrants in my spider web are not equal. I have 2 areas

of strength and 2 that are weaker. I am good in the area of collaboration and creation and not so

experienced in the control and compete section. Working for an international airline I can confirm

that my soft skills (Andrews & Higson 2008) can definitely be found in the collaboration quadrant.

Travelling, working overseas and my job at the airport helped me to gain cultural experience and

understanding. It also fostered my ability to work in a team and provide excellent customer

service. I am also very strong in the create quadrant especially in regards to innovation and

developing new ideas. Considering the control and compete quadrants I am very good at working

and managing across functions and motivating myself and others but I have a weakness in

developing and communicating a vision.

As a result I would say that I am mainly following the Human Relations Model and the Open

Systems Model (Leiper 2004, pp. 172-174) at this stage in my career and I would like to achieve a

better balance working on my skills in the control and compete sector. I am very good in dealing

with people and working in teams but I don’t have experience in leading others yet.
