The understanding of all information systems no matter which department you work in is a valuable thing for working in a healthcare setting. This allows your ability to collaborate and communicate with different departments much easier and helps to focus on the well-being of your patients. The many different systems in healthcare are where the doctor or staff record all data concerning a patient and their treatment, to better serve your patients' needs. All staff members from different departments/facilities will be able to access this information in a timely manner before or during visits. These systems allow doctors and medical staff to make decisions on a patient's healthcare with easy access and allow them to see previous medical history which also may help with medical treatment. These systems allow less room for error and more time for accurately treating a patient's needs and without the understanding of all systems it could cause more health problems for patients and errors in testing, surgery, or any other services they may need.
These systems work together to collect all data on patients and make them readily available when they need to be accessed. Each area of the hospital enters their data, and the doctors can access this information to determine the best treatment. Having knowledge of the various systems permits patients and staff alike to have the ability to view other portals between facilities. If all healthcare staff knows one system from another it allows them to share diagnostics, lab results, imaging results amongst facilities. The systems used help cut down on the amount of repeated testing and reduces medical error due to not fully knowing medical background on a patient.
