What it means to be a true friend
For a friend to be considered a true friend, he/she must present, loyal, honest and trustworthy. The definition of a true friend may vary from person to person, but the above-mentioned characteristics are what constitutes a true friend.
A present friend is always there for you when you need them. They help you get past the things you are going through be it stress at work or losing a loved one. They are present in the good times and the bad. They show up during your happy times to celebrate with you and during the sad times to grieve with you. They are always willing to listen to your problems and offer a shoulder to lean on.
The other character of a true friend is loyalty. A loyal friend is supportive and accepts you the way you are. They stay with you no matter the circumstance. They stand by you in the darkest of times and the greatest of times. They do not worry about your status in the society they are just faithful to who you are — the real you. You feel comfortable being around them and you do not feel the need to change who you are to earn their loyalty.
Honesty is a very significant factor in all kinds of relationships. True friends are honest with you. They tell you the absolute truth even when it is not exactly what you want to hear. A true friend will tell you what you need to hear. They do not have a habit of beating around the bush and tell you the truth as it is without any alterations. When a friend is always honest with you, it is easy to take their advice and guidance in various aspects of your life seriously.
Along with the other characteristics, a true friend also needs to be trustworthy. A true friend who is trustworthy will keep their word, and you will no have to worry about them sticking to what they promised. A trustworthy friend is not judgmental, and you can trust them to keep your darkest secrets. You can trust them with your emotions and fears.
The only true friend I have ever had is called Tamara. She has all the above qualities and more. We grew up together in the same neighborhood and even attended the same schools. Right now we are all grown up and live in different towns, but we always visit one another whenever we get the chance and are always there to celebrate each other’s milestones. I always feel safe talking to her about my problems, and she also shares her problems with me, and we help each other grow.
Even though I get to interact with other people who I also consider friends, Tamara is always the first one I think of when I need to talk to someone. She is like family to me. Always there when I need her. I feel very blessed to have her as my friend.
