Overview of reading content:

As this week’s title suggests, we are moving into a new era—intellectually and ecclesiastically. From the Council of Trent to new philosophical and theological directions (perhaps especially by way of Kant and Schleiermacher), our study takes us into the heart of Modernity, as well as various reactions to this new period in (mainly) Western history. Concurrently, there appears to be a “Great Awakening”—perhaps two of them—taking place in America, as well as “Revivals” in the land!

By the end of this week, students will be able to:

· Compare and contrast the central theological and philosophical areas of agreement and disagreement of the First and Second Awakenings in America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Conclude whether or not you deem the Awakenings to be a work of God or outpouring of the Spirit, providing support your position. (CLO 1, 3 & 5)

· Recall, classify and compare the philosophies, theological positions, perspectives and key personalities that influenced the Roman Catholic response to the Reformation. (CLO 1, 3)

· Recall, classify and compare the assumptions of Rationalism, Science, Historical Criticism, Secularization, Liberalism and Postmodernism and their challenges to Christian theology. (CLO 3)

Assignment:

Respond to the assignment in this week's Dialogue (Group Discussion) area in Blackboard.

Two “Great Awakening” occurred in America in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Although most Christians perhaps would see each of these as a true “work of God” or “outpouring of the Spirit,” it must be noted that there were significant differences between the First and Second Awakening.

After having completed this week’s required readings (along with any additional sources), compare and contrast the Awakenings in response to the following concerns: 

· What central theological and/or philosophical area/s of agreement do the Awakenings share?

· What is one major theological and/or philosophical difference between the Awakenings, and what is/are the reason/s for this?

· Finally, evaluate whether or not you deem these Awakenings (either, neither, or both) to be a work of God or outpouring of the Spirit, providing support for your position.
