In retrospect, we call it the Middle Ages. It began with the collapse of the Roman Empire in the west. There followed a period of obscurity and darkness from which civilization slowly reemerged. [MUSIC PLAYING] Yet during this period, very much of our present style of life was established. The Middle Ages still exert a powerful hold on our imagination.
The first major figure to emerge from this period was Charlemagne. He was to become a legend, the epitome of the ideal king. On Christmas Day, AD 800, the bishop of Rome crowned Charlemagne emperor. [MUSIC PLAYING]
Why the bishop of Rome? Because the magic of Rome, the Imperial City, still cast a spell over men's minds. So the bishop of Rome became
