[MUSIC PLAYING]
For the years 793, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records-- in this year, terrible portents were seen over Northumbria and sorely frightened the people. They consisted of immense whirlwinds and flashes of lightning and fiery dragons flying on the air. And, on the 8th of June, the ravages of heathen men miserably destroyed God's church on Lindisfarne with plunder and slaughter. The Viking age had exploded into history.
The common image of the Vikings is of a marauding pack of sea wolves-- not unlike a band of modern day Hell's Angels-- terrorizing peaceful and innocent people, especially churchmen. Their arrival was sudden, unexpected, and unwelcome. And, within a matter of a few years, they were known and feared throughout the Christian world.
