My Professional Disposition

To ensure the successful completion of my project study, I will cooperate with my dissertation committee by exhibiting behaviors of respect, honesty, and appropriate communication that will give me the opportunity to manage my committee chair. Single (2010) noted that doctoral dissertation students should make it a responsibility to manage their committee chairs. Managing the committee chair does not mean assuming the role of mentor instead of the mentee, but rather adopting a professional disposition of respect, appropriate communications behavior, and honesty, to avoid conflict or misunderstanding

Thomas (2017) noted that misunderstandings and communication gaps are challenges that oftentimes affect the relationship between students and their dissertation committees. To avoid such situations, I will find out from my advisors about the protocols observed at Walden (Butin, 2010). Lunenburg and Irby (2008) noted that it is a good practice to seek advice from a dissertation consultant when challenges emerge in a dissertation process. I am aware that there is usually a rich diversity in dissertation committees as the members come with different perspectives regarding the topic to be evaluated. I will therefore accept the indications from such diversity to learn and move on to my completion goal.

Concise, my professional disposition is to exhibit values and professional ethics that will help me maintain a healthy relationship with my committee chair and members for my own professional growth and success. I strongly believe that such a professional ethical relationship will make me successful and complete on time.

Professional Demeanor

It is a great way to end this class, reflecting on the relationship piece between university experts and my role as a doctoral candidate. Single (2010) wrote about four types of advisor involvement when conducting a research project:  mentoring, coaching, apprenticeship, and unadvisable models. I hope to work with my chair within the framework of the mentoring model, as I would like to learn from an expert in the field related to my research topic. As a school leader, I appreciate and value those who keep me informed about delayed deadlines, whether they are personal or professional in nature. Single (2010) noted the importance of keeping your committee in the loop when you may need a deadline extension, as well as not overusing this approach to maintain professionalism and desire to move forward. I hold myself to high standards and will carry this piece with me as I progress through my research study. In general, I want to get add to the knowledge base in my field; therefore, I am excited to dive into this work and learn from my chair how to become a scholar.

As Thomas (2017) discussed, things will go wrong during this journey. Taking his recommendation, I want to consciously create a contingency plan to continue the work if I am waiting on feedback. Revision is an important part of the process, so there is always something that will need to be polished. Another item I will hold myself accountable for is preparing questions for each session with my chair. Time is precious, and I want to ensure that I get clarity on items that I am questioning.  Finally, if I receive feedback that is opposite of what I believe, I hope to open the conversation with my chair in a positive manner. I recognize my chair is the expert, and I want to lean on his or her experience.  However, I also want to probe their thinking to help myself develop a deeper understanding what is meant in the comment. By being open and up front about my intentions when questioning comments in a respectful manner, I hope to really be able to gain a deeper understanding of the research process. Overall, I hope to cultivate a respectful, professional relationship with my mentor that will lead to the development of my own skill set.
