8-1 Discussion: Evaluating Ekvall's Dimensions of a Creative Climate (Part Two)

Last week, in Module Seven, you uploaded your completed Ekvall's dimensions of a creative

climate assessment and discussed the evaluation.

This week, you will review and respond to your peers' posts. Respond to at least two of your

peers (consider replying to a peer whose post has not been replied to yet). Address the following

points:

1. Review the posts by your peers about Ekvall's ten dimensions and provide your feedback

by answering the following questions:

Do you agree or disagree with the need for additional dimensions?

Were you surprised that Ekvall included only one dimension that is negatively

correlated? What conclusions can you draw from that fact?

Do you agree or disagree with the post about the dimension that is the most

difficult to assess?

2. Review the creative climate assessments posted by your peers and provide your feedback

by answering the following questions:

Based on the notes, did you disagree with any of the ten ratings in the

assessments?

Do you think it would be more beneficial for organizations to try to strengthen the

aspects of their creative climate that are the strongest or to improve the aspects

that are the weakest?

What recommendations would you make to the organization to improve their

creative climate? For example, think about how established organizations with

existing structures designed for efficient and effective use of resources can relax

some of their restrictions to allow playfulness, freedom, and risk-taking without

losing control of the things that allow it to be currently successful.

I like the concepts included in Ekvall's ten dimensions. However, I don't like mixing a negative

score in with positive scoring questions. I think it becomes more difficult to use the total score

When looking at Ekvall’s ten dimensions, I did not feel that there were any surprises. All of the

components that were included are keys to any successful organization, especially those that

want to create a climate of loyalty and productivity within their employees. I did like that one

of the dimensions dealt with conflict which is a part of any organization. Most successful

organizations have found a way to manage conflict effectively before it becomes detrimental

to the department or organization as a whole, but it is still something that needs to be

considered. However, I found it to be the most difficult to evaluate as I have only been with

my current employer for about 10 months and have fortunately not experienced any conflict

within my department to this point. If I were to add anything, it would be a category dealing

with teams specifically. As Tidd, Bessant, Kouzes, and Posner (2021, p. T-187), there are many

assets to using a team, including having greater access to knowledge and information, more

opportunities to share and cultivate information, a wider range of employee experiences to

draw from when creating new products or initiatives, group participation leading to more

understanding, acceptance, commitment and ownership from employees, and opportunities for

group development. These are all areas that should be evaluated within an organization to

fully assess their creative capabilities.

For my hospital system, there is a fairly open environment for creativity and innovation, though

there is still corporate structure that must be followed as well as laws and regulations in regard

to patient care. However, upper management is always looking for new opportunities to

improve patient care, efficiency, and lower costs. The lowest scored dimension my company

had from my point of view was conflict, but to be fair, I have only been with the company for

about 10 months and have not experienced any conflict to this point to fully evaluate that

category. However, I did rate it as a 1 because it would be naïve to think that there is no

conflict with hundreds of employees who all have different opinions about how things should

operate, but it is a testament to the organization that those conflicts are not commonly known

as they appear to be handled quickly. I did rate five different categories with a 3 rating, mostly

dealing with idea support, trust, and freedom. As an outreach athletic trainer, we have to have

a great deal of autonomy to run our facilities tailored to our own student populations, budgets,

and school personnel that we have to work with. We are able to run our practices how we

want within the confines of our state licensure regulations, and we are free to be as creative as

we want to treat patients and involve other students in our program.

Ekvall’s ten dimensions are a great way to evaluate a company’s environment. What I really

Hello!

I have been stuck at home with COVID that past week, so I did not interview anyone, instead I

found a company online to assess.

The one that surprised me the most was the playfulness and humor dimension. The reason this

surprised me is because when you think of innovative or creative business you think of strictly

business and no messing around so this kind of surprised me. It does make sense that to have a

creative business that you need some time to joke around and have a good time and just let

lose because those are the times you may come up with great ideas.

There are not any dimensions that I would add because they all hit on the major sections, and

all encompass a creative work environment. With communication and being able to share your

ideas is an important one.

The hardest to evaluate was the challenge dimension. The reason I say this is because unless

you talk to employees of the company you are only guessing if they are apart of all the

creativeness and feel apart of the company.

Tesla seems like a great place to work after reading the Forbes article. I think that the CEO

really wants it to be a great place to work and that he cares about his employees and the

environment with all the inventions he has created. One section that I rated the highest on was

the idea time because the CEO allows for the employees to be innovative while problem

solving and allows them to share their ideas. One dimension that I rated the lowest was trust

and openness. The reason I rated that one low is because it is run centrally by the CEO and the

article says that this allows for swift communication. However, I know that sometimes that is

not the case and things can get changed or switched around from the CEO all the way down to

the employees.
