Finding the Main Idea

Can you get to the main point?

  • In your English lessons, you learn about a main idea of a paragraph of a passage (i.e. a topic sentence) or a section of a chapter.
  • Identifying the main idea of a section can

greatly aid your comprehension of the material.

  • Sometimes, it involves scanning from

heading to heading in a chapter to identify

the main idea of the chapter.

  • Finding the main idea in a paragraph, section or chapter does take concentration and a degree of analytical skill.

Finding the Main Idea

The origin of emotion is the brain. You might say that there are two minds - one that thinks (the thinking mind) and one that feels (the emotional mind). Think of thoughts and emotions as two different systems for knowing and making sense of the world. The two minds are not enemies or physically separate; rather, they work together in an interactive way to build your mental life. Passion (the heart) controls reason (the mind) when feelings overflow.

Instructions: Read the following paragraph carefully.
