Week 9 Assignment Scenarios

The United States is an open society, which means we allow people to move freely about the nation. This makes defending the country from within a difficult proposition. There has been much discussion as to best practices to use in defending and protecting our nation. How do we know when someone means to do harm to the United States? Consider the following possible scenarios. Do they appear to be legitimate threats to our national security?

1. Mark, a 70-year-old former business owner, sends frequent angry messages to the President of the United States. The messages escalate in frustration and anger. Veiled threats are made toward the president and members of Congress, demanding that we have more transparency in government and less taxes.

2. Jim is a computer hacker who enjoys breaking into other people’s accounts, including corporate accounts. He knows how to access confidential government documents as well as the social security numbers of millions of Americans.

3. Ken served in Iraq but was discharged after having disagreements with his superiors. He lives alone and is angry at the way illegal aliens are allowed to remain in the U.S. and receive benefits. Ken lets off steam by going into the woods to fire his AR-15. He has recently joined a neo-Nazi organization and attends rallies in support of American rights.

4. Malik, an American citizen, has recently converted to Islam. He frequently visits websites sympathetic to radical jihadists and is planning on visiting relatives in the Middle East. He is employed, married, and has two children. He feels that Sharia law should be recognized in the United States.
