Behavior Observation
Section 7.2, Activity 1: Direct Behavioral Observations
After reading Chapter 15, watching the Instructor lecture video, and reading the posted IRIS resources on different types of behavior recording, complete the activity below.
In order to practice conducting different types of data collection, you will be asked to conduct two types of behavioral data collection below (Video 1 and Video 2). You will complete one observation method for the first link/video and one observation method for the second link/video. Read the information within each document, then click the video link and record the observation data.
Video 1: Frequency Recording
1. Read this informational resource about Frequency Recording from the IRIS Center: https://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/wp-content/uploads/pdf_activities/independent/IA_Frequency_and_Interval_Recording.pdf
2. Read the behavior description below for Student 1 (included below)
3. Click this link to watch the video: https://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/mcontent/frequency-and-interval/
4. Record the frequency data for this behavior as it occurs in the video (you can use the Frequency Recording Sheet included at the video link if you want to). Then calculate the rate that the behavior occurred during this observation (# occurrences divided by the length of time)
|
Behavior to observe: “During journal writing activities, Student makes comments to herself or to others (e.g., ‘This is boring’) or gestures (e.g., heavy sighing) unrelated to the academic material. Note: Be sure to count verbalizations and sighs as separate events.” (IRIS)

Video 2: Duration Recording
1. Read this informational resource about Duration Recording from the IRIS Center: https://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/wp-content/uploads/pdf_activities/independent/IA_Duration_and_Latency_Recording.pdf
2. Read the behavior description below for Student 2 (included below)
3. Click this link to watch the video: https://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/mcontent/duration-and-latency/
4. Record the duration data for this behavior as it occurs in the video (you can use the Duration Recording Sheet provided at the video link if you would like to). Then calculate the rate that the
behavior occurred during this observation (# occurrences divided by the length of time)

Behavior to observe: “During independent math activities, Student engages in off-task behaviors, which refers to any behavior lasting 5 seconds or longer that deviates from teacher instruction (e.g., looking around the room, playing with her hands or other objects.” (IRIS)
