An Essay draft for an Editorial Article
6a) WP1 Introduction
Write an essay introduction for WP1. As you will remember, the essay assignment is in week five. You may, if you like, use the following approach: first, introduce your readers to your general subject, which is how authors use ethos, pathos, and logos, and follow with a brief summary of the opinion piece--so that your readers know what it's about, after which you may offer your thesis.
While you may use a different approach, I do ask for this essay that you summarize the opinion piece, which includes noting the author's name, and that you include your thesis in your introduction as well. I also ask that you consider how to introduce your readers to your subject.
- Introduction
In your paper you will need to create an introduction that informs and engages your reader while also briefly summarizing the editorial, including its main argument, and offering your own thesis. The Purdue Owl has some useful suggestions about creating effective introductions:
Introduction
The introduction is the broad beginning of the paper that answers three important questions:
1. What is this?
2. Why am I reading it?
3. What do you want me to do?
You should answer these questions by doing the following:
1. Set the context – provide general information about the main idea, explaining the situation so the reader can make sense of the topic and the claims you make and support
2. State why the main idea is important – tell the reader why s/he should care and keep reading. Your goal is to create a compelling, clear, and convincing essay people will want to read and act upon
3. State your thesis/claim – compose a sentence or two stating the position you will support with logos (sound reasoning: induction, deduction), pathos (balanced emotional appeal), and ethos (author credibility). <http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/724/01/>
6b) WP1 partial draft
Please post a partial draft (600 - 700 words) of your essay, including the works cited or reference section. Please keep in mind, the only source you need for this essay is the one for your opinion piece.
analyze how an author uses ethos, pathos, and logos in a newspaper editorial. Your essay is not about whether you agree or disagree with the author, although you will address this at the very end of your essay, but instead how the author creates her, his, or their argument. Some editorials and op-eds are written anonymously which can cause problems for you as a writer. I suggest avoiding such pieces. Your analysis must demonstrate your ability to use ethos, logos, and pathos in the following ways: -- ability to identify ethos, logos and pathos in an argument -- ability to evaluate the effectiveness of an author’s use of the rhetorical triangle: ethos, logos, and pathos.
After you have analyzed the author’s use of ethos, logos and pathos you will explain whether you agree or disagree with the author. Your conclusion should answer the question “so what?” in that why does it matter that we understand how effectively authors (or your author) use ethos, pathos, and logos?
