Why is creating an e-portfolio an important assignment in OLCU 681?
There is value in creating the e-portfolio as it is a wonderful way to showcase the acquired learnings throughout the Masters in Organizational Leadership program. It is also an opportunity to select items from one’s work that highlight core concepts. Furthermore, it is also an opportunity to demonstrate how one has applied these learnings in one’s academic track and career path.
Beyond the required content, what additional content might you include?
Aside from the minimum required content, one can include links to social media sites (including blogs) and professional sites such as Linkedin that demonstrate our body of work. All of these items are intended to demonstrate knowledge of the M.A.O.L. program and experience. One can include a variety of media including video.
How will you use this portfolio after completing OLCU 681 and graduating?
The benefit of creating the e-portfolio is that one will have a unique URL link one can add to resumes or cover letters and the portfolio can be accessed by those within the Brandman network and also by anyone else outside of the network. It is a great tool for career growth.

Creating an e-portfolio is important for a number of reasons, depending on what you plan to do with your career and your degree. It is a good way to look back on the coursework and realize the extent of the education, which might not have really resonated with you if the degree was dragged out over time and the knowledge was gradual. The portfolio can also help you to identify and reference areas in which you have gained some expertise and insight. For example, if you are working with an organization that is considering a major change but does not know where to begin or how to plan for the process, you can read over your own insights and papers developed in OCLU615 and reference your own spin on models such as Kotter's 8-Steps.
Beyond the required content, what additional content might you include?
I have collected products and documents over the years that serve as both references and tools for future work. Some are as simple as mission statements that I agree with or standard operating procedures (SOP) for a certain task, while others are a database or matrix that can be repurposed to organize a project. Since I work as a network engineer I regularly reuse diagrams and signal-flow charts when I am developing a concept for a new implementation and these resources can be just an useful as the artifacts depicted in the portfolio requirements.
How will you use this portfolio after completing OLCU 681 and graduating?
I'm not entirely sure how often I will reference it or look back at it. I have a few years left in the military so I could see myself sharing some of the better essays and papers with some of my subordinate personnel to emphasize an applicable concept. I have considered having Soldiers generate their ethical framework or their vision of personal mastery based on signature assignments in this program but in most cases they do not have the time to dedicate to those types of things and any product they were to submit would likely be done just to meet my requirement rather than to better themselves. I could review the portfolio as a compass for reassessing my views on leadership and refocusing my efforts at times to stay consistent with best practices and conclusions that I had arrived at in the past. Sometimes the coursework forces a degree of analysis and thought that is more insightful than the operational decisions made in real time.

Creating an E-portfolio will allow one to gather various products or documents into one location, in a format that is standardized and easily referenced, not only to the student but to those who may want to learn about the student. In a way, it’s like a mini-biography, giving others a peak into one’s thought processes, analytical capabilities and problem-solving prowess.
Additionally, it gives the student a place to collect items that will allow for self-reflection. We will be able to review the scattered documents from other classes, compare them to real-life scenarios that we may have had to deal with, and give us an opportunity to reflect on the thoughts we put on paper. There are times when I am writing that I can put the emotions aside and concentrate on the analysis and research of a topic; these are the writings that give me the insight to deal with emotional issues.
Beyond the required content, what additional content might you include?
The inclusion of additional items would be dependent on the individual and the intended use. If the individual is younger and looking for employment, it can be used to tout one’s accomplishments, potential future capabilities, and personal character traits; one could include such things as master’s or Doctorate Degree program thesis, awards won, or recommendations from extra-curriculum directors such as coaches or volunteer coordinators. If the individual is older, and perhaps well established in their career, they could include items such as work accomplishments or volunteer related items, that could be used to join professional associations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers.
How will you use this portfolio after completing OLCU 681 and graduating?
The portfolio will be used as a go-to-point for various documents describing thought processes on various topics. The file or document may not be readily available when discussing things such as ethical behavior or leadership concepts with those being mentored, so having a collection point such as this will be quite useful. It can also be used to post additional documents in the future, as additional topics are explored, and knowledge gained. If we are to continue to learn and expand our mind then we must continue our own education, which should include reading and if possible, writing (Covey, 1989, p. 296).
