Example:

The literacy center is an important part of each early childhood classroom. My literacy center will include listening, guided reading, independent reading, magnetic wall, poetry, art, writing/handwriting, and ABC table. On the shelves, I will organize the supplies such as primary writing paper, dry erase ruled whiteboards, dry erase erasers, pencils, pens, pencil grip aids, sentence building language cards, comprehension cubs, double side magnet board, phonic dominoes, spelling memory game, a phonics spelling game, wooden reading blocks, ladybug letters, flashcards (action, prepositions, and emotions), workbooks, reading pointers, picture cards, sentence strips, alphabet bulletin board set, sequence cards, lowercase lacing letters, uppercase lacing letters, magnetic letter fishing game, magnetic letters set, and alphabet acorns.

I will set the following rules in my literacy center:

· Read a book quietly

· Take turns reading with your partner

· Try your best

· Raise your hand if you need help

· Talk in a quiet voice

The literacy center must have a good quality book collection that will reflect students' interests, backgrounds, and experiences. Moreover, it is important to provide a different reading, such as read-aloud, audio, and independent reading to students for better learning. I will include the following types of books: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, informational text, and picture storybooks. I want to include the books covering topics such as families, communities, careers, childhood experiences, cultural diversity, fantasy, seasonal/holidays, true stories, diverse abilities, nature and science, history, and humor.

I will change the literacy center’s decorations and supplies throughout the academic year to reflect the lesson’s topics, holidays, and seasons. Besides adding the books during the year, I will change some times to provide children with a better variety of books.

Moreover, I will pay detailed attention to the furniture arrangement in the literacy center. I want the students to feel comfortable and welcoming, and the space to dispose of knowledge. I will organize all shelves to ensure that they are accessible to students. The boxes will be organized by topic, level, and author in the labeled boxes. Each table (poetry, art, writing/handwriting, and ABC) will have separate labeled boxes with the students' materials. The rules of the center will be displayed in the student's field of vision. Moreover, I will create bulletin boards with important information to remember.

According to reading rockets, “Literacy centers promote student collaboration, facilitate student motivation, and provide targeted practice for students” (Literacy Centers, 2010). Therefore, I want my students to actively spend time in the literacy center and gain as much as possible knowledge from it. To get students interested in using the literacy center, I would explicitly teach, model and practice expected behaviors that I want my students to have during the center introduction. I will ask students to explore the center together and play some games and read a book. Also, it will demonstrate all the activities that students may do in the literacy center.

In conclusion, “with a variety of learning materials concerning alphabet and number knowledge, letter and word recognition, and vocabulary and comprehension, a reading center in the preschool classroom will promote the development of literacy skills” ( Preschool Reading Center Ideas and Set-Up, 2016).
