SOCW 6361 - Discussion: Policy Process and Public Opinion

· Explain what area you are interested in engaging in advocacy.

This student is considering advocacy in working with either clients who are experiencing substance use disorder, or in identifying ways to advocate for military veterans who may be facing homelessness

· Briefly, identify the related social problem and types of policies that may impact the social problem.

Policies affecting substance use disorder including policies at the Federal/State (Macro), Community/Agency (Mezzo), and within the Agency (Micro). In working with veterans and advocating at the Federal/State and at the County level appear to be the most effective methods.

· Identify 2-3 ideas you are considering for your Social Change Project.

This student’s advocacy ideas include broadening the awareness of issues, enlightening the constituency and public on how the issues are affecting them, and explaining how/why change will be beneficial.

· Explain how the project may impact clients in a clinical social work setting.

Client may be impacted in that they understand that someone is considering their issues and needs, could bring about more streamlined services and programs, and/or enhance existing programs to more effectively meet the client’s needs.
