For 10-12 points extra credit, depending on the grading discretion of the instructor, the student may write 2 sentences to answer each of the 5 following questions, 1(a)-(c) and 2(a) and (c) ONLY in the document posted as ChurchesQuestionsS20.doc in Assignments in the blackboard course. 4 additional points are available for submitting evidence of consulting with JHBC Professional Writing Center

The questions are based on the law review article Political Activity of Tax Exempt Churches, Particularly After Citizens United v. FEC and California Proposition 8's Ban on Same-Sex Marriage, 9 North Carolina First Amendment Law Review 448-485 (2011) by John R. Dorocak and Lloyd Peake and Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission, the U.S. Supreme Court case cited in that article.

Westlaw online is available through the campus Pfau Library website. Westlaw contains both the Citizens United case and the Dorocak and Peake article.

Please cite primary source authority (e.g., Citizens United) with the correct citation format (similar to the citations in the Solutions posted to the Study Problems in the ACCT 630 blackboard course) even if secondary authority is used (e.g., the Dorocak and Peake article) to arrive at primary authority (again, similar to the use of the Bittker and Eustice textbook; that is using secondary authority to find and cite primary source authority).

For citations to a case, page numbers are very helpful; e.g., Citizens United v. Fed. Election Comm’n, 558 U.S. 310, 478-485, 130 S. Ct. 876, 979-82 (2010). U.S. Supreme Court cases have multiple publishers; e.g., the cites 558 U.S. 310, 130 S.Ct. 876, 175 L.Ed.2d 753, are alternative citations to the Citizens United case as it is displayed in Westlaw.
