How to Develop CQ Knowledge

(Understand Different Languages)

Cultural Intelligence or Cultural Quotient (CQ) allows us to obtain a better understanding of other cultures and enables us to work in a positive and compassionate way with other people from diverse cultures. One way that helps us to develop CQ knowledge is to understand different languages. Languages and cultures are heavily intertwined. Therefore, being able to understand other languages are considered fundamental to intracultural effectiveness. Interaction with other languages is an important key to develop our cultural intelligence. Languages are not only a way of communication; languages are systems by which people create the reality in which they live (Johnson, 2017). A person's ability to interact in another language influences how he/she can increase their cultural intelligence. Also, communication in a foreign language helps us to achieve our personal, professional, and social goals.

COLLAPSE

I watched the Ted Talk “How language shapes the way we think.” I believe that the language we speak shapes the way we think and if we have more than one language, we will have different personalities.  I speak two languages, so I can understand what she is talking about. I liked the citation “To have a second language is to have a second soul.” I feel like the language represents a culture because when I speak my language I act differently than the way how I act when I speak my second language. My parents taught me what to say, how to say it, when is the right time to say something. However, when I was 18 years old, I learned my second language from college, so my learning process was totally different than when I grow up.

“Researchers say people can have different personalities in each language.”
