Respond to the posts on topic manager's job in a team and non-team environment

Managers job is designing a team, he/she may consider several factors or parameters while finalizing a team. According to me, the two most important elements while designing a team would include members with Technical or Functional expertise as well as Interpersonal Skills. Technical skills are extremely important to get the job done right. For instance, if I need a Java programmer or coder to verify a specific code so that a certain application is functioning correctly, I cannot hire someone who is a Petrochemical Engineer with no I.T skill sets to do the job. Similarly, interpersonal skills are very important to set the tone and the expectations correctly between team members including stakeholders. Interpersonal skills are basically soft skills and helps one communicate and form a working or personal relationship with others.
For effective team management, both are necessary to get the job done in an effective and efficient way especially if one is working in a fast paced competitive work environment. I would choose the same two skillsets in a face to face team as well as a virtual team. Interpersonal skills include communication skills and one has to have excellent written and spoken communications skills which are very important to get the job done correctly especially if one is working with a team which is virtual. Non Team -One may bring a new, fresh or different perspective to the team and that could be very rewarding in certain situations. Diversity is also extremely important because all team members can learn from one another and pick up skill sets which they may not have but someone else may have on the team. This is how synergies are produced and over the long haul it can be very beneficial. I feel more attached to my work team because all members have excellent team dynamics across the board. Roles are aligned, expectations are set & clearly defined and everyone does their part. If someone needs help we can approach anyone and keep the supervisor in the loop so he/she is aware of what is happening. Everyone respects the other team member and the organization's work culture makes a difference as to how everyone works and interacts in the team. My manager and supervisor are supportive and I think our "Team Identity" is constantly improving because of the positive attitude and reinforcements.
