Civility in the workplace bears a crucial role in creating and maintaining a healthy work environment. Civility centralizes genuine respect. Respect for each other in the workplace ensures equality and enables everyone to feel valued. The work environment assessment suggests that the health and civility of my workplace are moderate. There are some aspects of civility that are not fully applied in the workplace. My workplace is civil because communication from the top management to entire organizational levels is transparent and direct. The management recognizes, acknowledges, and rewards the efforts of each member of the organization, and there is a crucial consideration to time such as responding to emails on time, being punctual in arrivals to the workplace, and attending meetings (UT System Administration Office of Employee and Organizational Development, 2015)
There is a point in my professional work as a nurse where I encountered a significant form of incivility in the workplace. My colleagues and superiors were acting discriminately towards me because of my gender. For example, when there are meetings when we need to discuss crucial matters, they do not allow me to talk or give input. However, my contributions were disregarded whenever I had a chance because I am female. My male colleagues receive preferential treatment, they are given ideal work assignments, and their contributions are welcomed and implemented since they are males (Strategic Human Resource, 2019).
I brought up the issue, and the management took specific actions to curb discrimination. The organization conducted training on all employees on discrimination based on gender and other forms. In this way, all organization's members had a chance to understand their biases and discrimination and work towards eliminating them. The organization also established a clear policy on discrimination. `The policy was to ensure that whoever is discriminated has a chance of airing complaints, and severe penalties are given to those who discriminate (Fuhl, 2020).
