4-2 Sport Facility Project Report: Topic and Outline

o Chosen facility and its approval.

The sport facility I have selected for my final project is going to be the Audi Field for

DC United the soccer home team. This was one of the first facilities that came to mind when

thinking of this project. I am interested in researching it first because I personally think soccer

is one of the more interesting and entertaining sports. This facility also seemed like it would

be a great fit for the needed content to complete the project. I know from firsthand that the

stadium caused a lot of issues for the city council to be able to make a decision in favor of its

construction. Not only that, but once it was approved the facility seemed to have different

impacts on the community with construction leading to reconstruction of the whole highway

as well. I am interested in getting the details on if this was a benefit or deficit for the city

overall.

o What types of amenities are provided at this facility?

The $400 million project was able to come to life when the DC Council formally

approved the District of Columbia Soccer Stadium Development Act of 2014 with initial

estimated time from shovel to ground to fans in seats at 14 months SMPED.gov (2017). A

differential feature the Audi stadium has been that it is the first professional soccer stadium

without a public parking lot (Billington, 2018). Some may see this as a benefit but as for the

residents and surrounding communities is it convenient? For the fans, amenities like VIP

seating, the rooftop party deck, and first ever premier suites closer to the pitcher than

anywhere before (Billington, 2018). Some did believe despite the back-and-forth delays of

actual construction, as the first vision started in 2012 (Goff, 2017) not only would the facility

be built and open on time, but it would also bring new streams of revenue to the city.

o How does it compare with other similar facilities?

Compared to other facilities especially the same kind of sport facilities, the one has a

couple of things that make it stand out. The first I mentioned was it’s first ever close to pitcher

seats. Entire party suites at field level, the first ever stadium type to do so. There is also the

mention of the name of the facility itself. Yes there are other venues partnered and named with

big name companies, however no other 20,000 seating brand new field has a 10 to 15 year

name partnership with Audi (dmped.dc.gov 2017). There is also the unique construction that

does not include a parking lot. This is a very new structure for a mass sport stadium, but the

owners seem to see it as beneficial for the fans who the assume all commuted through public

transportation mostly anyway. Of course, there is also most cost saving benefits within taking

this route. It is the owners thinking that also makes this facility different.
