ASSIGNMENT 6 RESEARCH PAPER

For your final essay in this class, you will be required to write a research paper on an aspect of biopolitics that interests you. While for some this may sound daunting, you should know that you have been working on this essay for the entire semester. Assignment 1 asked you to closely read a product of popular culture that directly discusses biopolitics; Assignment 2 asked you to write a thesis statement based on Foucault’s theorization of biopolitics; Assignment 3 required you to continue your analysis of The Night Of and add a conclusion; Assignment 4 asked you to “apply” your thesis to paper one, fully explore your initial ideas with an argument in mind, and to write an introduction; Assignment 5 required that you summarize a published critic’s stance on biopolitics; and required that discuss the same critic’s argument alongside your own. In other words, you already have the foundation for a solid research paper—you have a working argument and some ideas that you can develop. With a bit more revision, some expansion of the thinking that you have already done, more research—for this essay you should find AT LEAST one more source, preferably secondary—you will have completed your final project. LENGTH AND FORMAT: 4–6 pages, double-spaced with 1 inch margins. You must not exceed 7 pages. GUIDELINES:

Please make certain you include the following: 1. The proper heading. 2. A title. 3. A proper introduction. 4. A clearly articulated 2-sentence thesis. 5. At least one more outside source (in addition to your primary source and the article

that you used for the foundation of Assignments 4 and 5). 6. A proper conclusion. 7. For 3 points extra credit, write the author of A Place Apart: Northern Ireland in the 1970s

on the last line of the last page of your essay. 8. A works cited page and in-text citations (formatted according to that which is most

commonly used in your intended field).

A 90–100 Points

• Has few surface errors and follows the formatting guidelines described above.

B 80–89 Points

THIS TYPE OF PAPER…

• Introduces at least one issue or idea not previously discussed in class.

• Usually supports claims with evidence from the text.

• Is, for the most part, well-organized, logical, and coherent but may have some weak spots (occasional gaps in logic, awkward transitions, and other structural inconsistencies).

• Uses language thoughtfully.

• Has some surface errors and follows the formatting guidelines described above.

C 70–79 Points

THIS TYPE OF PAPER…

• Does not introduce any new issues or ideas.

• Rarely supports claims with evidence from the text.

• Has several organizational flaws (several logical inconsistencies and a pronounced lack of structure).

• Uses language problematically or at times carelessly.

• Has several surface errors and fails to follow the formatting guidelines described above.
