Effective Introductions and Thesis Statements

It has a lot of excellent information about writing effective intros. Also, here are two examples of effective intros.

You will notice that the writer does not say "This paper will discuss" or “I will discuss” or “this paper is about” in either intro. Those statements are not effective or formal writing for your intros.

Example 1: The Marine Security Guard Program (MSG) comprises a small group of highly trained United States Marines standing duty in embassies and consulates around the world. The nature of their job requires high levels of maturity, independence, and integrity. The United States Departments of Defense and State trust these Marines with the responsibility of protecting personnel, property, and security within the embassies and consulates they serve. Problems arise, however, when Marines do not behave in the manner expected of them. National security is at risk when MSGs do not maintain personal and professional standards expected of them.

Example 2: Humans have sought answers of their own origin and development since creation. However, evolution and creation theories are only the beginning of development theory. Human beings are complicated, diverse, and magical organisms. Psychology, socio-culture, and biology are vital components of development. To study human development is to study physical and cognitive growth, moral development, maturation, and cultural measures of successful development. Human development does not occur in separate sections, without influence or impact by all the various things that make one human.
